An excellent overview of all the Airfix Battlesets

(I had the Beach Assault and Waterloo sets!)

Fun read!

Memories! I had the Assault set, Pontoon bridge assault set and waterloo. Sadly all I have now is the pontoon bridge and a pile of those green plastic tanks. That gun emplacement in the assault set could do cracking service now if I could find it.

Actually, I wonder where those tanks are, I have an idea…:)

Texas Jack02 May 2017 8:06 a.m. PST

Ah, that brought back a lot of memories of me whining because no one ever bought me any of them. huh?

I did have the Aurora Anzio set though, guess my folks thought that was enough. The fools! evil grin

I still have the Sherwood Castle, Caesar's Gate, and Waterloo "farm house" (La Haye Sainte) buildings. The figures were sold long ago.

I had the lot, Wild West Fort, Fort Sahara, Sherwood Castle, Caesar's Gate, all the assault sets but I didn´t see the Point of the Battlefront sets.

Shows how good they can look – mine never did when being attacked by the Patton and M113…

Khusrau02 May 2017 11:09 a.m. PST

that looks brilliant.

Mine is not half as good as that.

If that's 10 then mine is…..4.76.

bombersmoon02 May 2017 1:02 p.m. PST

Brilliant. Unless I am mistaken I think the list is missing one item :-
Charge of the light Brigade battle set …I had one of these about 500 years ago !. I am sure that was an Airfix product. British cavalry, Russian artillery, and a battlefield.

"when being attacked by the Patton and M113"

Wasn't the APC based on an FV432 rather than an M113?

Some features of both….

Probably nearer to the M113.

Maybe.

Patrick R03 May 2017 1:46 a.m. PST

Esci produced several sets as well, including a charge of the light brigade set.

LoL. Gotta love a discussion of Airfix polythene toys…

Airfix never did Crimea. Not all plastic are Airfix. Just as not all slot cars are Scalextric

Pauls Bods03 May 2017 12:50 p.m. PST

What this guy did with part of the Airfix Waterloo farmhouse!

Dagwood03 May 2017 1:09 p.m. PST

Didn't Airfix do a set of Crimean Hussars, but nothing else ?

Marc the plastics fan03 May 2017 11:34 p.m. PST

Nope

Here is an overview of the Esci battlesets.

At risk of showing my age, I had Pontoon Bridge Assault set – purchased with Green Shield Stamps from the shop in Weybridge. I still have the bridge, complete with pontoons, and the sandbag emplacements. It's about 40 years old now.

A couple of years later I won the Waterloo Assault Set in an Airfix Modellers Club competition. The club was run through the Battle comic and club president was Dick Emery! The only things I have left from that are the wagons.

I won the Airfix Western Train Robbery set in a TV Times competition!

Oh that train set is brilliant. Reminds me of the triang military trainsets from the 60s. Happy memories

But what is that scaffold that tiny cowboy is hanging from? It looks like a massive piece of civil engineering

Jefthing08 May 2017 8:29 a.m. PST

Brilliant! I can remember a similar train robbery set in the TV Times – it was more modern and I'm sure it had British commandos in it – that coincided with the Just William series. I entered that but didn't win – the power of Dick Emery can only stretch so far…. They must have had a job lot as giveaways.

There is a trapdoor in the roof of one of the carriages which lifts when it passes under the hanging by his fingertips man. He then gets scooped up and is able to rob the train!

I loved the Triang military sets – there was a sniper carriage which worked in a similar way only the trigger in the tracks made the sniper pop up.

We had an amazing Christmas a year or two after Hornby stopped making the Battlespace range – my parents must have got one of everything that was being cleared out in a cut-price offer in, I think, Hamleys!

Same competition!

There was a choice of prizes – I went for the Cowboy train.

Jefthing09 May 2017 11:33 a.m. PST

Ah, that explains it! No idea why I remember it so well – probably miffed I didn't win! Seems an odd connection, though: Just William and train robberies. Can't recall him having chums called Buster and Ronnie.

The other set was Dr X

picture

William and the outlaws often played at being Cowboys.

Not so much the "James Bond" adventures of Dr X.

Jefthing10 May 2017 10:41 a.m. PST

That's the one, complete with British commandos! One has to assume they were there to thwart the baddies and not disgruntled ex servicemen seeking to augment their pension.
