My sister and her family are vegetarians – and a little prissy about it – no leather for instance. It gets a little tricky to organize big family meals. I'm an omnivore – but, unlike Charlie Chaplin, I draw the line at leather!

Vegetarians and vegans are a menace because they threaten my preferred food-chain. Too much is at 'steak' to let them spread their anti-meat messaging without challenging them on it. As the famous British noble, Sir Loyne of Entrecôte, once said, "Ah, steak puns – a rare medium well done." Cheers and apologies: Rod Robertson. |

Vegetarians and vegans are a menace because they threaten my preferred food-chain. Funny, I always thought, "OK. More for me." In fact, I have found this type of behavioural difference to be a boon for marriage (and relationships in general). I hate Coke. My wife won't touch salt and vinegar potato chips. In over 25 years together, I have never drank her last soda and she has never finished off my chips. |

Anthony Bourdain himself was married to a vegetarian. Vegetarians and bike enthusiasts are intensely disliked by some because their example of a healthier, more sensible lifestyle make others feel quite guilty for taking a choice that they subconsciously know might well be a poor lifestyle decision for themselves and causes harm to others. Much response to vegans strikes me as rationalization, to blame the messenger, and denigrate the message even if he was not shouting it and minding his own business,as if just by asking for vegan fare for himself in a social environment, was a lambast. Guilt does that. Any arguments about the environment, world hunger, physical well-being, water use efficiency, reducing pain and suffering, can then be conveniently ignored. Selfish desires out of balance with social responsibility often requires tricky mind games and denigration is a useful tool in the rationalization game. Yeah, people tend to dislike being shown the fallacy of their own behaviors, because doing what is good is often so hard. |

Mick: "Yeah, people tend to dislike being shown the fallacy of their own behaviors, because doing what is good is often so hard." See! Those are exactly the holier-than-thou "martyrs" I find hard to swallow. They can't live and let live, without trying to tell you the "error" of your ways in every single conversation. And they make it that must harder for the more rational vegetarians. Dan PS. In some cases, I think it might just boil down to sausage-envy. :) |

I don't seek to convert. Your indignation is nothing but your own creation, I simply observe and comment when invited to do so. Any folks who come to this topic folder have to expect comment and discussion so don't give me that "you're so condescending" rubbish. I didn't go to a carnivore man cavve barbecue with a bull horn to bother you. You do what you you want and I won't do anything against it. You'll figure it out eventually. |

There was a piece on another website about 'America's 'Smug Liberal Problem'' that would seem to be quite appropriate here. |

Goragrad, Lol. Spot on! And they make it that much harder for the genuine ones to stay on the path, without being grouped together with this type. Dan |

Take a moment to re-read the OP's first sentence. Then read Mick's contributions to the discussion. Repeat. Nothing more need be said. |

From this thread and the responses, not really convinced that vegetarians are the smug ones ;) |

You make a valid point, Weasel. Thank you. Mick, I owe you an apology. One of my cardinal rules here on TMP and the internet in general is to avoid the various scrums on politics, religion and lifestyle that tend to break out, and I broke that rule today. I spoke in haste, imprudently, and hope you'll believe me when I say I'm sorry. Now, back to the Wild West and toy figures where I belong! Daryl |

Fishing, I was not aware that I needed an apology from you. One could read your words as being in agreement, or not. For the record: I am not even a vegetarian, Just a keen observer about how there are folks who are quick to react strongly to them just for their very existence.. I think I know why. The same sort of folks who love to label something as "fake news" so they can merrily ignore inconvenient facts. |

My daughter is a vegetarian and it is really annoying to have to buy separate (and seemingly more expensiv) food just for her. I find vegetarians smug, sanctimonious and their almost inevitable evangelical proselytising very annoying. I rank them with religious people and socialists on the annoying scale for many of the same reasons but at least you don't have to think of a whole alternative menu if a socialist comes to dinner. It's also more complex than just not serving meat, too, there is all that nonsense about things like cheese having animal products in them so you have to squint at all the ingredients of everything to ensure that there isn't something there they are offended by. Just eat meat like everyone else. The only good animal is a cooked animal! |

I find vegetarians smug, sanctimonious and their almost inevitable evangelical proselytising very annoying. An interesting generalization. So, if someone actually were a vegetarian, but not an evangelizer, how would you know? |
Mick the Metalsmith | 05 May 2017 5:40 a.m. PST |
Seriously, legates, annoyance about reading a label? Surely your daughter is worth that little bit of effort. And "everyone else" doesn't eat meat. Would you make a Hindu guest eat it because you can't be bothered to read the label? I hate to think how much it would put you out if you have kosher friends over. Again. requests for special diets isn't a lambast/criticism of a carnivore diet in themselves, but perceiving such as annoying or when they have to defend their views when attacked for having them and then calling them evangelicalistic is just rationalization.

Vegetarians, don't take good, I prefer my meat to be meat fed, makes them juicier. |

Vegetarians have improved the menus at some diners. I find that a delicious light meal is a vegetarian burger, with cheese and bacon. It's not too heavy, but sufficiently filling, and tastes great. |

Oberlindes Sol LIC, the vegan black bean patty at Subway is awesome with bacon and pepper jack cheese! |

I don't dislike them at all. Speaking personally, I eat very little meat (and that only poultry and fish on occasion). My wife and I enjoy vegetarian dinners several days each week and are far healthier as a consequence. |
