I show how to make a sabot base for your wargaming trees in a similar vein to the citadel forests that you can buy from GW, but at a fraction of the cost. Check out the video at:

Thanks for watching!

Great tutorial, thanks for posting.

Why make (sabot) holes in the base at all?

That way, if suitably flocked etc, the base can also double as rough terrain etc.

Alternatively, use magnetic circles (available from Litko) and mount the trees on washers.

I like to make the sabot bases so that the trees can be used individually if I'm looking for a more sparsely forested board. Also the sabots allow you to remove the trees when units enter the forest, allowing more room for troop placement. I believe Luke Aps has a great tutorial where he doesn't make sabots, but instead uses the woodland scenics armatures and can pop off the tops of the tree during the game if needed.

I use various sized pieces of green felt, which have been covered in a combination of static grass and a mixture of leaves and sticks which have been ground up in a blender. I stick all that to the felt with spray glue. The trees are based on washers which are then flocked with the same ground up leaves and static grass. You can barely tell they aren't part of the felt base cloth and no sabots needed!

Examples of my method can be seen in this TMP thread-- TMP link

Those felt bases are pretty awesome, I may have to try some of those in the future.
