Does anyone have any experience with these rules? Can you provide a review? Thanks.

There's a Yahoo group dedicated to the rules here:

Our local group will be giving them a go on June 11.

They have been mentioned in several other TMP threads. A search of the archive should turn them up. Try both "Polemos" and "Polemous" as spellings.

I love these rules. I helped playtest them and got on splendidly with them as my introduction to ECW gaming. I have done a huge 6mm Cheriton game 3 times now at a local convention with the rules and each time players caught on to the mechanisms in no time and had great fun playing. I have even had several repeat players.

Some of the better game mechanics are these: Intiative is determined by bidding Tempo points, these points are also used to manuver and rally troops. Cavalry charges are treated very well with the psychological element on both sides coming fully into play. Standard bases have a 2:1 width to depth ratio and all game measurements are in base widths and base depths, use what ever size basing you like.

They give a great feel fo rthe ECW, artillery is mostly a psychological weapon, cavalry that catch unprepared foot (especially in the flank or rear) will sweep them away, but steady pike will hold off horse for a long time.

Rules are included for romantic Highland charges (in addition to the somewhat less effective historical ones)

If you yhave any questions be sure to check out teh Yahoo group or swing by the Baccus 6mm website.

Be careful though, I find this game highly addictive.

Why did I read this (and the review in WI)?!?!? now I really want to go to the Baccus site and order the starter set!

Don't do that.

Order it from Heritage-Studios.com and you'll have it in a few days!

We are playing tomorrow - Edgehill.

I can't really add to much more than Dave Crowell. The rules are excellent and give a really good feel of being a General. The one thing I would say, that he didn't, is that they are for large battles. 2 of us are playing Edgehill tomorrow!

Does the starter set contain decent sized forces? Or would it be ebst to buy more?

I assume you're referring to Baccus 6mm. You might want to contact Steve DeYoung at Heritage Studios. I'm sure he'll answer your questions.

BTW, the rules are not limited to 6mm. You can use any scale. For my game next week, I'm using 28mm Renegade & Bicorne ECW.

Trojan: I would say the starter packs are just that - a starter army. It is enough to play with but of course it is always better to have more :)

If it was me I would be tempted to get an extra foot and horse booster pack & split them between the sides. But then knowing me I would look again & end up buying hordes :)

Hwiccee03 Jun 2005 12:35 p.m. PST

p.s I just checked and for tomorrows game the Royalist will have 20 bases of cavalry, 18 of infantry, 4 of dragoons and 3 guns. This is the full army at Edgehill and so will give you an idea about force sizes. So the starter pack seems to be roughly half this, i.e. a good starting force.

@ John N Holly : thanks for the info on scales other than 6mm!! I was wondering about that very thing.

For your 28mm forces, what size bases do you use, and how many figures do you put on each? I understand a single "base" represents a regiment of the period, is that correct? Thanks for any help.

[For your 28mm forces, what size bases do you use, and how many figures do you put on each? I understand a single "base" represents a regiment of the period, is that correct? Thanks for any help.]

The rules call for base width to be twice the depth, so for our test run of the rules, we are mounting them on 2.5" by 5" bases (sabot bases I use for an ECW skirmish game), four pike and four shot (mostly) with some variation for shot-heavy or pike heavy units. In the future we may increase the base sizes and add more figures (perhaps 3" by 6" bases with 10-12 figures).

Mounted will be five figures arrayed in a single line (my horse are mounted on 1" by 2" individual bases).

We may take some pics of the game, as one of the group members is Steve from Heritage Studios (US Baccus rep), who wants to demonstrate that Polemos can be used at any scale. He plans to post them on his website.
