Bought an assembled Hirst Arts dungeon a few years ago. Way to many skulls and shinny glaze.

After chipping off the most of the skulls and using filler on the gaps, I started to paint the whole thing. If you every do this, please take before pictures.

After that:

Seal with gray exterior house paint.

For my dungeons: * I use paper terrain products.

I also use home-made, carved up XPS foam insulation, covered with crumpled paper grocery sack cut to match, glued to the surface, for rock texture, and as ice cavern texture. I paint the rock pieces a light tan, then apply The Dip, to create a mid to dark rock surface. For the ice block pieces, ceiling white latex paint, followed by a light blue sponge painting technique, on the higher points, to give it some depth.

picture

For a base, I use foam puzzle mats. For the rock surface, I used different browns, sponge painted. For the ice fields, I used ceiling white latex paint, followed by the sponged' on, blue's, just like the textured XPS pieces. The rock/ice wall sections are placed end-to-end, to form chambers, making them completely modular. Cheers!

However my mistress tells me.

geekygamer28 Apr 2017 9:37 p.m. PST

All done with cheap craft paints.
Black primer & undercoat; charcoal gray; thicket green; yellow brown, sage green; wash of thinned black paint.

I'm old school. I use a battlemat and markers. Or just grid paper and pencil.

Ranger32220 May 2017 7:08 p.m. PST

On my first one…Flat black undercoat, then medium gray sponging

On the one I'm planning to build I'll probably mix in some greens and highlights and finish with a black wash.

Has anyone used the 2.5D method? There are a bunch of videos on YouTube.

I've been working on a set of basic tiles with the 1.25" squares using a laser cutter/etcher the local library put in. 4 squares to a tile on 1/8 inch plywood.

For painting, my current plan is to hit that with a black primer, then a layer of the stone texture spray paint, then a black wash, then a seal, and then put some felt on the back of the tiles.

Relatively simple to do

tdkguy, the 2.5D method is fantastic! You've seen the videos. What more needs to be said? If you have not visited DM Scotty's forum, it is highly recommended: friendly, informative beyond belief. ;-) More threads, and photo's, than you can imagine. Cheers!

with the blood and entrails of the fallen? LOL ;)

infojunky26 Jun 2017 4:35 p.m. PST

Pen and Ink, frequently Illustration Markers. My Dungeons (read Deckplans and station maps) are all 2.5d constructed from Foamcore and Card Stock.

Now location specific Scatter Terrain, generally the same as miniatures.

Old Contemptibles28 Jun 2017 3:45 p.m. PST

Couple of gallons of stain block primer. Then about three gallons of latex paint. I cut in with a angle brush. Then use a roller. Unless they are stones then I spray the whole room.

tkdguy28 Jun 2017 11:50 p.m. PST

Thanks for the link, Sgt Slag. I have wondered if DM Scotty (or DMG or Wyloch) is a member here.

I would craft some dungeons if I had a regular game; I may try a few tiles anyway just for the sake of making something.
