So curious about what the ratings of some of the odder and smaller units might be. I am in the process of painting up some odds and sods to use in a Peninsular campaign, and thought I would crowdsource these troop types:

French dismounted gendarmes (line, not guard)
The Gendarmarie "Legion of Burgos"
Spanish guerillas
British sailors (as gunners, sappers, or infantry)

My gut instincts are that the gendarmes of either class would rate elites, that the guerillas would be highly variable, possibly as high as landwehr but probably untrained militia or rabble. I would put the sailors as comparable to Royal Artillery if gunners, but significantly lower as infantrymen- perhaps even just Landwehr (I.e., brave, but very much out of their element).

ManyGuerillas were for more trained and organized than you might think. I usually rate tgem as militia.

Well,Wellington (who was not noted for his fondness for irregularities, as a general rule), valued them highly, although that may have been as a source of intelligence. But militia seems about right, allowing for some variability between bands.

What about the French Chasseurs des Montagnes? They were created out of the National Guard, but dribbled deserters after they were sent to Spain in violation of a promise. My guess is Regular or conscript line.
