Been looking at various pictures of British WW2 support weapons (Vickers MG, 2in mortar, 3in mortar, PIAT) and can't work out what colours were used on the parts that were painted (Vickers tripod, mortar tubes, etc). I have found hardly any contemporary colour pictures but sources like restorers, re-enactors, illustrators, museums etc seem to suggest a range of greens and (less commonly?) khaki-brown? I'm not thinking about the desert war here…

Anybody have any insights?

Mostly dark green…pretty variable so really you can't go far wrong.

I just use the same color I'm using on my Brit artillery (whether they are in Europe or the desert) and then cover all infantry weapons with a heavy dry brush of 'generic dirt'.

Everyone I game with seems to accept this without question.

what colour do you paint their helmets.

I use Humbrol 159 for British Army Deep Bronze Green for all Brit green metal.

Vickers MGs I do as black + a tan barrel.

Thanks chaps. Reinforced some of my thinking so I've gone with close-to-helmet-colour.

Correct! These items were issued from the company quartermaster's store where they got painted the same color.

My PIAT is dark green with a white sighting line down the top center…
