1-Is this game [box set & the stand alone rule book not yet released] a limited release buy it 'now or never' product, or is it a general release? is will I be able to buy it retail come fall?

2- What is the recommended game board size?

3- Any word on what the stand alone rulebook will cost?

It's been many many years since I've played a GW product, though I still have tons of their minis.

Thanks!
Amalric

Limited release and already sold out in many if not most places. That's for the boxed game. No confirmation on the standalone rulebook but should be more readily available, I'm thinking.

Don't know the recommended board size since I decided not to pick up the game.

I think APR 22nd was when the standalone book was supposed to be up for pre-order. Haven't heard what its price will be.

The rulebook says as small as 2' x 2', but you shouldn't need any larger than 4' x 4'. I'm paraphrasing somewhat, but that's more or less how it's stated.

Two foot square is pretty small unless you are working with several "floors". From Necromunda, three square is good, four feet with dense two to four-tiered scenery can make for a fun but rather lengthy game. grin

1. I think the box game is limited release, but everything except the book is available separately now. (scouts, orks, terrain)

2. 3x3 or 4x4 should do it.

3. The book is going to be redone with more options for weapons and races and released later this year. I am going to guess $50 USD

I haven't seen the details from GW but Dakka is saying $40 USD for a 200 or so page hardback rulebook that will have the original races, the updates that are currently online and additional content.

GW says preorder starts on April 22nd.

Based on my experience with Necromunda (I do not have Shadow War yet) a 3x3 board with dense terrain is ideal. I'd rather play on a 2.5x2.5 with really dense multi-level terrain than a 3x3 or 4x4 with sparser terrain.

Yeah, there really should be no point where you have more than six to eight inches of unobstructed LOS.

Shadow War rulebook confirmed to be 200 pages, $40 USD, preorder Saturday 4/22, in an email sent to retailers.

If you can find a copy of the box game, jump on it. Box game has something like $175 USD worth of terrain, the rulebook, plus a box of 5 SM Scouts and a box of 10 Ork Boyz for $130. USD

New terrain is pretty nice, my gaming group spent all Sunday building it and magnetizing a few pieces like doors.

I picked up several "Manufactorum" boxes to drop in the mix. They're actually not a bad value, though the "Lego Factor" is far inferior to the SW:A terrain (it's really not as good as the plastic and cardboard Necomunda terrain in that matter!). But hey, model glue sticks anything together.

I need to make some narrow ramps to link thinks together, working around the fact that the two different terrain systems don't match up level-to-level.

@Lion, Box has 10 scouts actually (set of 5 scouts with snipers, missile launcher, and set of 5 scouts with boltguns or shotguns or heavy bolter or bolt pistol/knife, chainsword, etc) – also, main box has 7 big sprues. If you bought each of the terrain sets you'd get 8 big sprues. So more like about $150 USD value of terrain.

Still, a great deal! Wish I had bought two sets :(

This may seem like a dumb question, but can you play just regular space marines, or do you have to play scouts?

Thanks

Judge Doug26 Apr 2017 8:35 a.m. PST

@malleman

Only a Scout Team, but you can get Space Marines (Veterans, Terminators, Apothecaries etc) on your team for one mission. Like hired swords in Mordheim.

But GW has released even more new factions for free, Sisters of Battle and Inquisition link
