I am honored to take on the role of Archduke Charles in John Shelton's upcoming epic refight of Aspern-Essling. The refight is currently slated for late summer/early fall of 2018 in the Dayton, Ohio, area using EMPIRE 5th edition. Considering the quality and committment of the host, the international and USA players already coming to the project, the beautifully-painted armies being assembled and much more, the combination of the player gathering and gaming event should be an experience never to be forgotten. Thanks, John, for taking on this massive responsibility. Therefore, the thread was started in the hopes that John will be able to share with all the progress of the massive, custom-modeled terrain---a project that by itself is an epic undertaking, given the size of the field and the terrain features. Regards, |

Thanks for posting this Scott, look forward to seeing more as the project progresses. I hate living in Oz sometimes, I'd love to attend! |

Looking forward to seeing the terrain build. Does Aspern-Essling require any rules mods for the riverine aspects of the battle? Has been awhile since I had my old edition of EV, it's all R&E for me now. Actually reminds me of another question I had at the back of my mind: am I missing something, or does R&E not have rules to address fording? |

Thank you very much Scott for that very eloquent announcement. This is a very challenging battle from all perspectives. The first challenge is the battlefield. Tomorrow Ill see if I can figure out how to include a link, and I'll give a link to my personal site for our Waterloo event we had two years ago. It will show my intentions and goals. For an event like this I endeavor to create, not a regular game table, but a veritable terrain model that we fight on. The challenge here is that, with exceptions concerning some famous landmarks, (granary, church, bridge), there is not a lot of detailed information out there, not nearly comparable to Waterloo. Not nearly the contours that Waterloo has, but challenging nonetheless. I'll create a new site just for this battle so anyone interested can keep up on the progress. Being French this is a challenge to fight as well. We are faced with an exceptional commander and a serious dearth of troops! I'm very excited about this event. As a side note, to maximize the special nature of this event-people coming from overseas, and a large gathering of very knowledgeable players for three days, we are also fighting Quatre Bras simultaneously! Thanks again Scott! |

Thanks, John. Everyone already committed to the event is thrilled to be part of it. And two battles at the same time!!! The hotel meeting room is going to be a fantastic area for photo ops. Insofar as special rules are concerned, yes, there are custom mods for the Aspern-Essling refight, many of which center around the pontoon bridges over the Danube, the floating mills sent downstream by the Austrians to hopefully break the bridges, the odds to inflict damage, ammuntion ramifications from any significantly long-term breaks (as really happened), how such information is sequestered, engineering considerations for repair, and much more. As we get closer to the event and the special mods get fully developed and vetted, I plan on posting them here. Thanks to all for your good will. I can only hope that some more of our long-time international friends can make the event, especially some of our Italian, Brit and Oz EMPIRE experts. Regards, |

If there is room for another player on the French side and the dates can be firmed up I'd love to join. Have to fly in, but it would be well worth it to me. |

Is there any update to this project? A rumor has it that the Host house burned down and the collection made so far was lost and lucky host and family are safe. MG |
