Also,

" Well deck capacity: one LCAC or one LCU or four LCM-8 or nine LCM-6 or 24 amphibious assault vehicles (AAV)"

"On 5 May AUSTIN set sail for Morehead City where she embarked the 1st Battalion, 8th Marines (BLT 1/8), and the 24th Marine Amphibious Unit (MAU 24) before heading out across the Atlantic."

Former Gator sailor here (LST (Operations Officer), LSD (Executive Officer), LHA (Navigator)). AUSTIN would have been part of a three to five ship Amphibious Ready Group depending on the time frame.

The short answer to your questions is "It depends". Seriously, it depends on how you wanted to load out the ARG. A combat load out was different than an administrative load out in that the combat loaded the ships in a manner that facilitated an assault while an administrative load out tried to cram as much into the ships as possible with no concern for the order in which it was taken out.

Sometimes, most of the heavy equipment went to the LHA/LHD, while other times it was spread out. The LSTs and LSDs were the usual homes for the AAVs as the LPDs were a bit deep drafted for the role. Also, the LPDs had a helo hanger (LSDs and LSTs only had a flight deck; no hanger) so they were frequently troop heavy/vehicle light and embarked a couple of helos.

Sometimes, the LPDs carried extra LCUs or LCACs that were used to off-load the LHA/LHD.

If the decision was made to pre-load the LCUs and M-8s, a LCU could carry four tanks and an 8-boat one. Most of the amphibs were modified to accommodate LCACs which could carry a single tank.

I don't know if any of this helped… ;-)

Scott Chisholm
