Evening!

link

Part of the Salute releases brings us these mounted shieldmaidens, along with their Jarl – Lathgertha.

I noticed a huge lack of mounted female minis, especially units. So these are available as units, but also individually, as there are some nice characters in there, they are all individually sculpted, rather than the same dude with s slightly moved arm, as can be the case with dark age cav. There are some great pre order deals up on the website, especially if you buy the whole lot.

I've had these designed to be useful for both dark age and fantasy. They are the first of many more mounted ladies across history and fantasy.

All sculpted by Alan Marsh, and shown painted by Darren Linington.

See you at Salute!

Battleaxes, could there be any more awkward weapon to effectively use on horseback? All that weight on the far end of the weapon, and a hard swing threatens to cost the rider her balance. But they are very nice sculpts!

Rule of cool! Also have a small gripe on seeing Vikings with swords 90% of the time, which wasn't a thing.

Annie,
Is the second axe wielding rider from the left imitating your hair do? 8^)
Axes were one of several reasons I hadn't intended to buy the mounted figures, but I think they would be easy fodder for a weapon conversion.
I've almost finished painting all my Bad Squiddo figures, just as Annie is getting new figures to market, so it may soon be time to place another order.

Haha, maybe!

They are open handed, so you can easily swap weapons :)

Axes were very common weapons to use from horseback, along with maces, for the reason that you can hit your oponent then ride away.

Very nice models, sort of a cool subdued look.

Open-handed with a choice of weapons would be perfect for the persnicketty. Bow, lance, sword, or axe!

I'm aware of Robert the Bruce's famous axe encounter with de Bohun at Bannockburn. But figure there must be a reason we see few clubbing weapons used by cavalry, historically, compared to bows, sabres, or spears.

Nice models again Annie!

Since Vikings horse equipped forces were mounted infantry and not cavalry, the ideal weapon was the one at hand. And there are plenty of examples in the later medieval of the mace and axe used by even cavalry as a side arm. The mace in particular was a better tool to deal with armored knights then a sword.
