Over fifteen years ago, I made a few uniform plates destined to accompany a small work on the Spanish army of the AWI. Nothing came of it. The project was abandoned soon, but I still have the plates.

As I'd always liked very much the style of Malcolm McGregor's SYW and AWI uniform reconstructions, I decided to use some of his SYW soldiers as illustrated in "Uniforms of the Seven Years' War 1756-63" as a model and rework them in order to represent Spanish uniforms as seen on the various AWI war theatres. I also tried to give my soldiers a typical Spanish look (not necessarily the foreigners, of course).

Don't know whether I succeeded and whether you'd agree with all of my then reconstructions (made after contemporary illustrations, extant objects, and descriptions). Today, I'd make a few changes but, on the whole, I'd leave everything as it is. As mentioned, the project was abandoned long ago, so no need to rack one's brain, neither mine nor yours…Hope that, at any rate, you'll enjoy what you see…

Plate A: La Habana, 1779-83
1. Ensign, América Veteran Dragoon Squadron (reconstructed the remnants of the flag as a guidon – as the unit was called "dragoons"- but it may, actually, have been a – square – standard…)

3. Fusilier, Fijo de la Habana Infantry Regiment

Plate B: Manchak to Mobile, 1779-80

Plate D: Menorca, 1781-82:
1. Fusilier, Princesa Infantry Regiment
2. Grenadier, Saboya Infantry Regiment
3. Trooper, Numancia Dragoon Regiment
4. Ensign, Betschart (Swiss) Infantry Regiment)

Plate E: Gibraltar, 1779-83
1. Captain, Voluntarios de España Light Cavalry Regiment
2. Fusilier, Gibraltar (San Roque), Algeciras y los Barrios Urban Militia Companies

Those are really outstanding! You should try to make them available for purchase on some high quality paper as military prints.

Congrats!

Fantastic

It is a pity that the project was abandoned. These plates are superb.

Thank you for sharing them.

Nicely done – Thanks

Brechtel19814 Apr 2017 2:05 p.m. PST

Very well done.

They should be published or at least printed on high-quality paper for sale.

dBerczerk14 Apr 2017 2:21 p.m. PST

Quite lovely! It may be time for a Spanish contingent for my AWI collection.

Florida Tory14 Apr 2017 2:39 p.m. PST

Agree these are outstanding!

FYI, the standard on display in the Museo del Ejercito, Toledo is a swallow-tailed guidon, so you have that right. I believe it may have been purple rather than red. I saw it on a visit in 2012, but, alas, no photos were allowed. Hopefully someone else who has been there more recently can correct my memory.

Thanks everybody for your kind words.

Legend to plate C2 should read "Aide-de-camp", of course…

Oh Bugger14 Apr 2017 3:42 p.m. PST

Very fine work indeed, you have real talent.

grtbrt14 Apr 2017 4:13 p.m. PST

Very impressive – More incentive to do Spanish

Buckeye AKA Darryl14 Apr 2017 5:15 p.m. PST

Should be able to give you multiple +1s and thumbs ups for this one. Great work here!!!

Bill N14 Apr 2017 5:24 p.m. PST

Very nice. If you've abandoned the idea of publishing your own work perhaps someone else who decides to write on the Spanish army in the AWI can use them.

nevinsrip14 Apr 2017 5:33 p.m. PST

WOW!!!!

Make them available for purchase. Please! These plates fill a huge gap in AWI uniformology.

You are extremely talented!

Lovely!
I'd buy these. They are going to be useful when I get to the Spanish in my AWI project.
Thanks!

I'd like to add my appreciation. Deftly done and very characterful= and very clever adaptaion of the original. I envy your talent. These should be seen – and why not do more?!

Old Contemptibles15 Apr 2017 11:32 a.m. PST

Thank you very much. They are wonderful!

Old Contemptibles15 Apr 2017 11:35 a.m. PST

Does anyone make these figures?

Swampking15 Apr 2017 11:35 a.m. PST

I'll reinforce what all other posters have said – simply outstanding!

You should make these available as high quality prints – I'd buy some as well.

Too bad the 'Washington's Wars' line by Jeff Valent isn't available – the American line infantry would be perfect for the Spanish infantry.

Altefritz15 Apr 2017 2:27 p.m. PST

Wonderful plates with a lot of interesting uniforms.

axabrax16 Apr 2017 11:51 a.m. PST

Gold mine! Show these prints to the Perry's, and maybe we can convince them to do a supporting figure range…

I would pay for high res. versions of these images although it would be good if you could label the images themselves for reference.

GiloUK16 Apr 2017 2:03 p.m. PST

Excellent work. If you want the Perries to make them, buy more AWI French!

huron725 Supporting Member of TMP16 Apr 2017 3:10 p.m. PST

I am not even into this side of the AWI war but these are first rate.

Khusrau17 Apr 2017 1:34 a.m. PST

Great stuff. I want them now, even though I know nothing about Spanish involvement in AWI.

Personal logo Der Alte Fritz Supporting Member of TMP05 May 2017 9:26 a.m. PST

Beautiful drawings and much needed uniformology formthe Spanish involvement in the AWI.

jambo105 May 2017 9:49 a.m. PST

Oh Wow!! great stuff, hope you can get them published.

Stever05 May 2017 2:59 p.m. PST

A pity I did not know about these several months ago for my book being published later this month: The Battle of St. Louis, the Attack on Cahokia and the American Revolution in the West. One chapter covers uniforms of the Spanish fixed regiment and militia, 2 chapters cover the Spanish campaigns on the Mississippi and gulf coast and another covers the war on a worldwide basis which includes the attack on the Bahamas and the campaign in Central America. Probably will do a second edition in a few years so I will keep your info on file. Great stuff and nice work- my compliments.
