Elite TMPers, I have an opportunity to visit the Netherlands during the first week of May. I want to see the various Market Garden sites (I have Major and Mrs Holt's Battlefield Guide) but thought the collective wisdom of this site might be of value as I plan the visit. Would the holidays around May 4th and 5th (Liberation and Remembrance Days) affect walking around the areas/visiting museums? I think we will be flying into Amsterdam. My initial plan is to drive down to Eindhoven on Day 1, go to Nijmegan on Day 2, and then finish up in Arnhem on Day 3. Not much time really but it is a pop up event. Any thoughts on "Must sees!" such as the Airborne Museum in Oosterbeek? Thanks in advance for your ideas. |

Overloon is pretty neat, especially if you can make it to Militracks, the largest meeting of German WWII vehicles in the world. militracks.nl/en There is also the Nationaal Militair Museum link And then there is the Museum in Oosterbeek, well worth a visit. |

If you go to Oosterbeek to see that excellent museum (due to its connection to the battle) I would encourage you to walk to the cemetery taking the time to look at the houses along the way. I was struck by the markers on some of the houses paying tribute to the individual Paras who fell on their property. It was sobering and touching at the same time. |

Alas, my potential trip evaporated! If only . . . Thanks for the ideas. I will integrate them with my other thoughts if the opportunity arises in the future. |

When you do go, visit Overloon certainly. You'd be better with Waddy's guide to the battlefield, it's much more useful than Holt's. . The NH Rijnhotel is a good place to stay – it's a good location for walking around significant parts of the battlefield and it's on a really useful bus route and there's good parking too. If you get a room in the 'old' part of the building you'll be staying in a battle location…how cool (or sad) is that? |
