The D&D Rust Monster was inspired by a bag of plastic figures Gary Gygax found in a dime store. I've had one forever and can't even remember where I got it.

The other day I was inspired to paint it so I dug it out and slapped some paint on it.

Maybe this needs to hit the Frostgrave table was well as a Dungeon.

My husband has met Mr. Gygax, and he tells a sad tale of meeting an "Icon" who was very drunk and very bitter.

I kept reading the topic name as "Ironic Rust Monster", which does make sense, sorta …

I have that same figure. I hope I can do as well a job repainting it :-)

Ooh, I was lucky enough to buy some similar bags of plastic critters back in the day and find a few rust monsters in them! (Also bulettes, land sharks). They've since been sold off as D&D collectibles. Sometimes I wish I had them back. But there are surely official, sanctioned metal versions now?

Shirleylyn, I worked at TSR in 1980-81, and even then, E. Gary G., God bless him, could be less than sterling. Your husband is likely not alone in his experience. But, then, de mortuis nil nisi bonum.

Rust monsters worked great against iron golems !

I've got one of these on order from an eBay seller and I want to paint him just like the above example!

If I had a D&D character again, I'd go out of my way to obtain a baby Rust Monster as a pet and train him to go after my enemies (keeping him safely under a Rust Monster magic sweater for protection against his power at other times).

Oh I hate those things! I was always a fighter and my DM LOVED making one of critters appear. GRRRRRRRRRRRRR
