PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte instructed Thursday the military to claim islands located in the disputed South China Sea, which are within the Philippines' exclusive economic zone and continental shelf.

After his talk to the soldiers of the Western Command at Camp Ricarte in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan, Duterte ordered the military to start construction and raise the Philippine flag on the islands owned by the Philippines in the contested waters.

Everybody wants a little flyspeck atoll to call their own in the So. China Sea! It would be cute and funny if it weren't so dangerous.

So much for the Philippines' "pivot" to China.

Watch now as the fun begins. If computers, grids, networks, etc. start to crash in the PI, you'll know why.

Given the variety of actors in the area, plenty of good scenarios for Harpoon games set in the SCS and ECS.

Actually there are lots of resources out there besides oil. Fisheries is a big thing too. The Philippines has a large population and fish is a big part of their diet. Giving up those "fly specks" means giving up the food resource too. China wants them all and claims them all.

Duterte was not happy when Chinese survey ships were detected recently in Philippine waters!

"There's oil!"

Exactly. Lots and lots of oil!!!

Plus expanded fishing rights which, for the Philippines and Vietnam, are incredibly important food resources.

A little military adventure is always good for distracting the population.
