I just wrote a blog post dealing with finding a good basing scheme for the WSS. link

I fiddle around a lot with basing ideas as well. To me, you need to go with the two base frontage per stand, as the single strip based stands visually strike me as being three units because of the gap between the figure bases.

With the strips, I decided to go with "no base" basing--strips glued on steel paper the same footprint as the strips--in my case, two,in a double rank. Three of these "bases" to a batallion. Avoids the gaps.

I picked up a copy of BLB at Cold Wars, but don't have it with me. How rigid are the basing requirements? I thought rules writers were starting to realize that many gamers are no longer willing to rebase, just to try out a new set.

Well,I've successfully posted a pic here, for the first time! I don't know if it was worth it--this was an experiment with my phone a couple of years ago. And my painting skills are,to put it mildly, modest.

But this will give you some idea of what I mean. I decided to go with this "basing" in part because the OG AWI range (the first I purchased) were already sort of terrained. I need to repaint these,I think,to more closely match my game cloth (not the one in the pic).

I think I have a pic of some WSS,I'll try that next, but the basing is the same.

BLB has a suggested format for basing but state you can use any basing you want.

Thanks,I thought I remembered reading that from a quick skim. I'll try another pic:

A couple of WSS French, on an uneven surface,IIRC. One problem with these is a lack of most of the kind of terraining done on the AWI strips. I'll have to come up with something.

Anyway, this method is obviously not for everyone. One reason for choosing it is the dream of a game with all historical units present (the units are only three inches long). Your larger units will be impressive, I'm sure. As a matter of fact, when I showed some of mine to Russ Dunaway, his immediate reaction was "Units are too small!" I did point out they were 30-men units, but he said he likes to see "hundred-man units!"

Well,he would : ) I thought about asking whether he'd rather have 30 hundred-man units,or 100 30-man units; I would think the latter,as command packs cost more(haha!), but I knew what he'd say--"100 hundred-man units!" : ( Great,if you're a master of space and time--I'm not!

In any event, for anyone thinking about trying this, I see no reason why it couldn't work with 3 ranks,or two strips across,or more than 3 "bases". Of course,it also depends on how you feel about handling your figures. Doesn't really bother me.

@Hafen

Your figures look pretty good to me.

Thanks,Jim! When I spoke of repainting, I should have said I was referring to the bases--I like to get them close to the ground color.

Not to say my painting doesn't need improvement! I'm going to have to do a better job trimming the steel paper to fit the strips, too. But as I said, these were early experiments.

Oh,and hey--a shout out and hats off to Condotta, for the great tip on posting pics here:

Thanks! Very helpful to a tech dummy!

Thanks,Vic--sorry it took a month and a half to get to it!

Now, if we can get Steamingdave to show some of his. . .
