Wow, a PERFECT score! Congratulations!Share this quiz and challenge your friends on facebook. Do you think think they can equal your score? (Well, no thanks. Don't feel the need to post it to Facebook. But thanks for asking.) Wasn't too sure on a couple of them. For example which CV got the first hits at Midway … was kind of a coin toss based on my understanding of planes from 2 carriers arriving and attacking simultaneously. And the first Kamikaze attacks … there were a few scattered efforts before the first major action, so I worried that they were looking for the actual "first" effort, rather than the first large-scale action. But … I'll take my 20/20 without too much complaining. -Mark (aka: Mk 1) |

12/20. Mediocre at best. Never much interested in the Pacific theatre. Only the big carrier battles which I mostly got right. |

11/20 for me. I've only read a bit about the Pacific theater, mostly focused on the infantry. Pretty sure I've seen all of the information but couldn't remember most of it and my luck on the guesses wasn't good. |

19/20. That's what I get for not reading or gaming anything Pacific for two decades. Frikken Kamikaze. |

Japanese pilots were inclined to try to hit something important on the ground if their plane was going down anyway (as opposed to Americans trying to get out of the plane), even as early as Pearl Harbor. But I believe the first organized kamikaze attacks were during the invasion of the Philippines in '44. |

Japanese pilots were inclined to try to hit something important on the ground if their plane was going down anyway … But I believe the first organized kamikaze attacks were during the invasion of the Philippines in '44. I have read descriptions of deliberate suicide missions being flown prior to the battle that was the "correct" answer in the quiz. But these were the initiatives of small unit commanders or individual aircrew. One particular case I read of was a 2-plane mission. I think they used Judy naval strike bombers, but I may be mistaken on that detail. Two pilots in a land-based squadron with few remaining serviceable aircraft proposed the mission to their squadron commander, who accepted. They put 2 bombs on each plane, and took off at dawn with the intention of finding and crashing into a US carrier. They did not return from their mission. However, the USN records do not describe any case of an obvious attempt at a suicide attack on that day. Were they among the several aircraft intercepted and shot down in that region? Did they just fly until they ran out of fuel and fell into the sea? Don't know. Would this mission have satisfied the question in the quiz? I think it would have, given how the question was asked, but [SPOILER ALERT] clearly it was not what the author of that quiz had in mind. So don't use it as your answer! -Mark (aka: Mk 1) |
