Hi All,
I'm coming to New York for a week in mid May. Is there a retailer of GHQ moderns in the New York area? I'm desirous of taking the opportunity of purchasing some of their stuff and avoiding the crippling UK import tax.
Any suggestions?
What are the best historical/military visitor attractions (museums etc)?
It's all in aid of my wife's 60th birthday celebrations, but hey, I might as well take the opportunities while I'm there. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Well preface this with I haven't been to NYC since I was 4, but… if I could here are a couple sites. There is an aircraft carrier in the harbour which is a floating aircraft museum. On Long Island there is an early aviation museum called the Cradle of Aviation Museum, or something like that. A couple hours north of NYC is Old Rhienbeck Aerodrome. On weekends it has an airshow of original, and repo pre WWII aircraft. Finally in Connecticut there is a submarine museum. I think it is called the Maritime Force Museum, or something like that. These are where I would be going.

Rhinebeck is amazing to visit but it is World War 1 era aircraft.

I few years ago I looked in to this and the short answer was there are no real minis shops in NYC. A couple boardgame places. But nothing you won't readily find in the UK anyway – Flames of War, Games Workshop etc.

Maybe it's changed since then?

As stated above about a 2 hour hour drive for each

Closer, probably an hour barring heavy traffic

If you are in New York and Manhattan in particular then the Intrepid is a must-see.

Closest shop I can think of is The Citadel in Groton CT…that's 2 hours up I-95 though…BUT…he has stuff still marked at prices from the year he bought them…sorry but i got most of the $5.95 USD and $6.95 USD packs a couple of years ago but he has a huge selection…best I have ever seen…WW2, moderns plus the naval lines! i have not been there in over a year so call first to be sure he is still active. BTW in Niantic CT just off 95 is the book barn…that alone is worth the trip! over several million titles, i think its the 3rd largest used book store in the country, awesome and huge military section and CHEAP…remember u have the CG Academy, the sub base, etc near by so lots of military stuff. Good luck!

Sorry I didnt notice it was your wifes bday…you could drive up to the north end of Long Island…very nice drive, beautiful Victorian homes and all kinds of nice outlet malls, then take the big car ferry over to New London which is right next to Groton…u mite even see a whale, I did once…its a cool boat ride either way. You also have the aquarium there,Mystic is super nice, then u could drive south on I-95 and about 10 miles down is Niantic…very nice seaside town with the AWESOME Book Barn, then its a rather unpleasant 2 hour drive down 95 to NYC or u cud stay over at the Mohegan Sun Casino which is world class and take the ferryback in a day or 2. I lived in that area for years…hit me up if you have any questions at jasonpasquale (at) yahoo I'd be happy to help.

The Nautilus Museum is in Groton.

Since people are recommending stuff in the New London/Groton area let me chime in there with a visit to Ft Griswold, a harbor defensive fort and site of a Revolutionary War battle and massacre of prisoners by the British under the overall command of noted American Traitor Benedict Arnold. Across the River is another Seacoast fortification, Ft' Trumbull (a later work). Among the historical notes for it is that is where John Reynolds, who commanded the First Corps in the Army of the Potomac at Gettysburg (where he was killed) was stationed at the outbreak of the Civil War.

For NYC itself, take the Staten Island Ferry. It's FREE(!) and it gives beautiful views of Lower Manhattan, the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and the NY Harbor Forts, most of which are still in existence. The only military museum in the City is at Ft. Hamilton,

If you take the Staten Island Ferry (and BTW, when you get to Staten Island (unless you want to poke around there) you have to disembark and then re-board to go back to Manhattan) you'll be in Battery Park, named of course for the Harbor Defense Batteries that used to be there. The building where you get tickets to see the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island is one of the Old Batteries itself. This is the oldest part of NYC, I saw that someone mentioned Fraunces Tavern which is where Washington bade the officers of the Continental Army goodbye after the Revolution. South Street Seaport is also a nice visit.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art should be on your list of things to see. You could also take a short trip up the Hudson River Valley to West Point which of course has a museum of it's own.

Sadly as been pointed out NY City rents have driven gaming stores and the like out but when last I checked "The Compleat (sic) Strategist) was still open but I don't think that the carry GHQ.

Here's a photo of one of the NYC Harbor Forts taken from the Staten Island Ferry;

Have the GHQ items you want shipped to where you are staying in NY.
Pick an out of NY state webstore and you will also avoid the NY sales tax.

(for WAY out of your way…) If you were stopping in Minnesota (your wife might like the Mall of America) then "The Source" north of the cities is a great spot no shops near NYC that I know of however. There is a store just outside of NYC in NJ that carries some GHQ, Maplewood Hobbies. Not been there in a couple years so they may not carry it any longer.

vtsaogames01 Apr 2017 12:56 p.m. PST

Staten Island ferry is a really nice ride, good view of the harbor, passes within a couple hundred yards of the Statue of Liberty. And the price is right.

PrivateSnafu01 Apr 2017 3:57 p.m. PST

I highly recommend taking a boat tour around Manhattan.

Thanks all. Much appreciated. I think saltflats1929 hit the nail on the head. I wonder if GHQ would deliver to my hotel in the time slot that I'm there? I'll have to give them a ring. Thanks again.
Is there an archaeological/ancient history museum? or is that all in the Smithsonian in Washington?

Dynaman878902 Apr 2017 4:39 a.m. PST

GHQ shipping is fairly quick but a delivery in a week is iffy. Maybe call them ahead of time and have them ship the day you get to the hotel (or see if the hotel would hold them for you if they arrive early)

You also might order from Noble Knight Games, they carry an extensive GHQ line and I've always received orders from them within three days of ordering – I live in southern NJ so the ship times should be similar.

The 2 best museums to see in NYC:
Museum of Natural History (that has your archeology, dinosaurs etc) and the Metropolitan Museum of Art (loaded with great arms and armor/armour).
They are at opposite sides of central park (but might be too much to squeeze into one day).
They also used to be "voluntary entry fee" but I haven't been there in a while.

Bellbottom04 Apr 2017 11:48 a.m. PST

Thanks again all.

I don't know if it is still open, but the DuPont Museum houses original documents of interest: Einstein warning FDR that this atomic bomb test might burn off Earth's atmosphere, Mozart sheet music, Benedict Arnold offering to sell a small fort only used by little old ladies on Sundays.

Intrepid Museum is on the aircraft carrier.
