Hi, I've just started a project to do Waterloo with Black Powder rules in 1/72. Looking on Plastic Soldier Review I can't see any specific Hanoverian infantry. I was wondering if anyone could suggest a proxy. I'm not fussed on uniform details, etc, I assume I just need some figures with flat caps?

Thanks,

Furgie

Off the top of my head, I believe they use the English pattern uniform. As for the Shako, it would either be Belgic shako for the regular line or the stovepipe for the lanwehr.

Not in Plastic but Newline designs does Hanoverians (with the flat hats you´re looking for)

Hanoverians did not wear flat caps, apart from Kielmansegge's Jaegerkorps and perhaps a few off duty officers. Warlord Games illustrations of them doing so are wrong.

Hanoverian regulars wore very similar uniforms to British, including Belgic shakos. Regular light battalions (Luneburg and Grubengagen) wore KGL Light uniforms (ie green jackets, grey trousers and light infantry shakos. Luneburg Light officers were supposed to wear cornflower blue trousers.

Landwehr wore British stovepipe shakos (ie Peninsular style) although most Landwehr officers wore Belgic shakos.

Officers were supposed to wear yellow Hanoverian sashes, but many were still wearing British crimson ones. All Hanoverians were supposed to wear plumes of white over yellow, but many still had British white over red. Light infantry wore green plumes, as did Hanoverian line battalion sharpshooters (they had no light companies but a number of nominated rifle-armed sharpshooters per company, who converged to form skirmish screens).

I think the good Mr. MacArthur has summed up the situation nicely. Limit the flat caps to Kielmansegge's Field Jaeger Corps, and otherwise rely on sashes, atandards, plumes and the quirks of individual regiments. (There's also some spotty evidence that backpacks weren't all painted black. Yellow and tan are sometimes mentioned.)

For myself, I keep proper Hanoverian officers in yellow sashes, but the Landwehr have a small KGL cadre, represented by a sergeant and a company-grade officer both uniformed for KGL line--Belgic shakos, dark blue facings, blue rucksack for the Sergeant and a British sash for the officer.

Yes. I bought the Warlord boxed plastic Napoleonic Hanoverian Infantry (soft caps) link set last year for other projects.

It never occurred to me that that their landwehr at least could have worn the Prussian style peaked soft cap. Just for the sake of correct information does anyone know where Warlord got their source? Box art is nice.

Cheriton,

There is a Knotel print of a Hanoverian off duty officer in such a red cap with a yellow band. Warlord Games have inaccurately assumed that such a dress was worn by complete battalions.

There are also similar prints of off duty Brunswick officers wearing that style of cap (in their case black).

Those caps are very similar to current British Army dress hats.

furgie,

Going back to your original question of which figures to use, I used Airfix (or the Hat re-issue) for my Hanoverians. You can see some of these here:

If I was doing it now, I might use Hat's 8186 British Peninsular Infantry. They have stovepipe shakos, so work as Hanoverian Landwehr. They also have spare Belgic shako heads, so these can be used as Hanoverian Regulars' Landwehr officers and the over 200 KGL Officers and Sergeants attached to Hanoverian Landwehr at Waterloo.

This is what I was thinking of from the Mont St Jean website:

They do have caps and stove pipes. So either would do.
