GaryCon IX happened this past weekend at the Grand Geneva resort in Lake Geneva WI. There were a lot of wargames there, the HMGS-Midwest represented there as well as a lot of old school Battletech, Chainmail, Star Wars and Ral Partha's Chaos Wars! There are some really good photo albums out if you'd like to check them out. Pictures by Guy Fullerton from the weekend: link My Saturday Chaos Wars game: link My Sunday Chaos Wars game: flic.kr/s/aHskRRyfHW If you haven't been to GaryCon, give it a try! Next year, it is from Mar 8-11. |

A very nice venue. Pricy but I'm happy to pay not to stay/eat in a mold factory. I co-GMed a Raid on Rohan miniatures game. My daughter played a bunch of different games – jousting, D%D and a boardgame "Time Stories" plsu a late, late night Werewolf game (went til 2!). We'll probably be back next year, though I might look for a cheaper hotel (paid $289 USD this year). |

P.S. I thought HMGS missed a real opportunity here. They had games and a banner but no people to represent, no literature, no swag. Heck, no explanation of what the HMGS on the banner stood for. Pretty much par for teh course for the local chapter I'm afraid…. |

Sorry I missed your game Chgowiz, I was signed up for it but went home early Friday night. I was in a couple of great games at the show (I was in the Wings of Glory and Dragons game, got to play Call of Cthulhu and played a General Quarters game), and it is a fine venue. I've been to a lot of game conventions, but this was the first I'd ever been to with table side food and drink service. I went home early, however, as I was in a room Friday afternoon (I think it was Meadow Lawn A?) that got so loud that everyone playing in the game I was in got sick from it. The room in my Friday afternoon game was ridiculously loud. The guy next to me got nauseous from it and had to leave early. My own ears were ringing so loud they are still ringing several days later and I felt like crap the rest of the day. I've gamed at the Historicon in Fredricksburg and that was a cake walk compared to this. I had no issues anywhere else at the show, but there was just something about that room and the ridiculous number of people that were stuffed into it that made it untenable. I unfortunately had to bail on Saturday, and was signed up for your game. Seeing those pictures, I'm sorry I missed it. With the exception of the noise in that room, I loved the show, and will be attending next year (I will avoid that room, though…) |

Mark, Just to be fair. HMGS now really refers to HMGS.Inc (what use to be known as east). I believe your comments were meant to refer to HMGS-Midwest. |

@TGerritsen – Ack! If you get a chance, you might want to swing by the garycon.com forums (under "community") and let them know. It did get pretty loud in the rooms, although I'm not sure what they could do about it. Attendance for that con was apparently close to 1,700. I am at Little Wars doing similar Chaos Wars games, so maybe we'll see you there? |

Mark, I am both sorry and surprised to hear that. The very person you were co-GMing with, was Skip Peterson. Skip was the Northshore room rep for HMGS while Steve, Tibor, John, and I were running games in the Legends of Wargaming room. I am sure if you would have asked Skip what HMGS meant he would have told you. Our other GM's were running events at Adepticon. While the swag (event and promotional dice) were reserved for the players we could have given you some. The literature was on the table right in front of the Northshore room. You had to walk by it to get to the Raid on Rohan game. I am glad that you will be joining us as a vendor at Little Wars. We will make a point to come by and answer any questions you may have. We did get some pretty good reviews from the Gary Con staff. Kevin and Steve, We thank you guys for bringing some beautiful and fun events to Gary Con. I think that it is critical to us to continue bringing historical miniatures and old school events in the same or greater numbers as we grow. Gary con is about Gaming, all kinds of gaming. But featuring the roots of our hobby alongside newer facets is very important. The HMGS is helping us make that happen. Please give my thanks to all of the folks that brought games and refereed scenarios.
Cheers, Luke Gygax Agreed. Kevin, Steve and Skip, thanks very much for the kind words and for the support that you guys bring to the show. Your presentation and attention to detail is fantastic — even down to the scrapped wood on pole of a tower…that's excellent. I heard nothing but praise from anyone who attended any of your events (whether they were in LoW room or in Northshore). Thank you so much for coming again. Can't wait to see what you put together next year. Thanx, Dave Conant Convention Manager |

I only had one day available to go to either GaryCon or Adepticon and chose Adepticon, mainly because I went to shop, not play, and there is no entry fee. Looks like a good time. Maybe next year… |
