The third Central London curry-tastic one-day ADLG event took place a few weeks ago on a rare major-sporting-event-free Sunday.

The theme was Late Medieval, and having been thoroughly schooled on the art of Medieval stuff at The Worlds last year, but also being rather short on practice time to get my head round an Indian-type army with game-changing elephants I was dithering as to what to take.

But then, inspired by a crushing defeat to an Italian teenager in Belgium, and realising that the half-painted army that I had bought up in Derby the previous year was actually within reach of completion, the idea of taking Medieval Scots floated up to the top of the pile.

Taking the army of Flodden to a competition where many of the opponents would be stuffed with English Longbows was perhaps not the most obvious approach, but it had the advantage of being simple to play in an event where I'd be doing the scoring as well.

See the results, and hear the critique from Wee Jimmy Hannibal McHannibal in these 3 L'Art de la Guerre Match Reports

Good fun, as ever. Thanks for sharing.

A good read as usual – though I tend to agree with wee Jimmy, a few more light troops would be an idea.

I am quite happy with fielding mediocre pikemen – they did quite well for me in a Pyrrhic game recently. I could have used a few more when I had my Pontic cap on as well.

Thanks, McMadAxeman, for another lovely battle report.

One way to deal with the likes of Crossbowmen is to shoot back at them. There are at least 2 quite shooty options available to the Scots:

Strategist/Ordinary/Ordinary-Ally (all included)
1 x Foot Knight Elite
15 x Pike
4 x Longbowmen Mediocre
4 x Highlanders Medium Sword Bow
24 Units/88 Cohesion Points

Brilliant/Ordinary/Ordinary-Ally (all included)
2 x Foot Knights Elite
1 x Foot Knight
12 x Pike
4 x Light Infantry Bow
2 x Crossbowmen
4 x Highlanders Medium Sword Bow
25 Units/86 Cohesion Points

Medium Sword Bow are a blessed troop type in AdlG. They shoot as Bow Pavise and fight as Medium Sword Support, so only pay a 2 point premium for Bow (not 3 as you might think). They will greatly reduce terrain problems for the Scots Pike.

Hope that helps.

I forgot to add that the second of the above lists allows one of the infantry blocks to advance with a full protective screen on a 6-wide front, for example:

XB LI LI LI LI XB
FK Pk Pk Pk Pk FK
(+ reserves)

All the best.
