Do you treat hull down positions as simply "concealed" or do you have a house rule? We do a 50/50. If you hit roll a die: 1-3 hit the turret, 4-6 hit the dirt. But no -1 for concealed unless there is other terrain involved (trees, cmo etc.). |

For the rules we use (BG WW2), hull down makes it an Obscured target, so harder to observe. But if it's observed and then hit, no difference (rules say a unit that's hit is either destroyed, immobilized, pinned, or nr effect, depending on your roll). |

I love how people answer a Flames of War question by citing other rules. |

In FoW, we play it as Concealed. Then you go to armor saves etc. In many cases where a "tank" has a shed built on top to house artillery, the Armor value is treated exactly as the shed would be. Thus, Priests, Bishops, etc do not have Sherman or Valentine saves, but tin wall saves. Thus if you score a hit while concealed, the save is on the part sticking out. |

BGWWII tank charts! Anything on the chart hit that's exposed is a hit |

Winston, this is TMP. Where a person can explicitly ask for a US painter and the first several posts suggest 'Don't limit yourself to the US…'. TMP link |

Just the standard concealed rule. |

Just concealed, nothing else. |

Concealed. But we have a House rule for spotting where it is harder to spot, react to & shoot at concealed targets as long as they are not shooting. This means that they typically won't be spotted until the target is at short range. |

I think they should be harder to hit too, as well as being harder to spot. |

Play it as concealed. We also just make sitting anywhere on a hill as concealed (not just behind the crest) |

Varies, depending upon the vehicles turret's size ratio to the overall size of the vehicle, as well as its aspect (front/rear, or side on), but generally, a WWII turret is only about 35% – 40% of the size of the entire vehicle combined. |

Rules should also take into account gun depression when calculating hull down. Although this varied greatly tank to tank in general: Americans – Very Good gun depression Germans & British – Good gun depression Soviets – Horrible gun Depression |

FOW simplifies but just having the target concealed. Some other rules also/instead only allow turret hits. |

@Winston Smith "I love how people answer a Flames of War question by citing other rules". The OP was asking for opinions and ideas for 'house rules'. pzivh43 did exactly that so what's the issue? He gave a constructive suggestion that could be applied regardless of the rule system it comes from. |

Mako11: "Concealed" in FOW means that there is a -1 to hit modifier, and I believe the rules treat hull down the same as "Gone to Ground" (for infantry), which actually makes it a -2 to hit. The difference is that "Gone to Ground" units cannot fire, where we allow a the -2 to hit penalty against dug in tanks that may still fire. |
VonBurge | 29 Mar 2017 5:32 a.m. PST |
Technically, Gone-to-ground units can fire. They just give up their gone-to-ground status when they do. |
