If we assume you want a unit to be a battalion and not a brigade, I would suggest the following:

Two divisions of infantry, each comprised of 6 battalions, plus two batteries of guns. Number of guns per battery depends on what rules you use.

One division of cavalry, comprised of 6 regiments.

If you use 24 man infantry and 12 man cavalry, plus one gun per battery:

288 foot
72 horse
4 guns, each with 4 crew

I would then add:

1 Commander
2 Cavalry Generals
8 foot generals

Or you might build to a specific battle like Talavera:

Now we are talkin..great stuff.now after some thought I may as well think about Peninsular French.can I assume slightly fewer figures since they will be of superior quality??

Not really. They are better than the Spanish for sure, but you'll probably want the same number, Becasue of course once Nosey shows up you'll need them.

Besides, there are not too many interesting battles between just French and Spanish without the British involved anyway.

I wonder……

Oh I think I'll just send my Poles up that hill….what harm can a few cannon do? Somasi something? Never heard of it.

I am sure my Marins de la Garde are too much of an elite to worry about a bunch of scurvy Spaniards. Where is this Baylen anyway?

Look at the OOB for Ocano, this should be the largest Spanish army deployed. Talavera would be another choice.

Thanks guys…any recommended rules out there ?at present FOG is what we are playing.ancient, medieval and renaissance.cheers again.john.BTW I like simple rules lol….

I agree with pulling a couple of divisions from a real oob as others have said. Zaya's division from Albuera is popular as his troops acquitted themselves well.

I question (sorry Mark) Mr Crispy's 6 Regiments of cavalry – more likely 1 squadron from each of 6 regiments – again look at Albuera oob. Equally I doubt that there would be that much Spanish artillery present. Boosting cavalry/artillery numbers compared to infantry is pretty popular in Napoleonic wargames though, so you might want that much for some specific scenarios.

Good luck

John

For rules I'd have to suggest Over The Hills. New ish, intended for that size game, simple to start with and a range of extra rules.

One book has all the rules and army lists.

Stocked by Caliver books.

Unless you already know positively that there are plenty of Napoleonic gamers living in your vicinity, I would strongly recommend that you work alternately on units from both sides, so that you can provide all the troops necessary for a fairly balanced game. This can also be a help if there are disputes over rules and basing systems. You can host games using your preferred rules. When someone wants to use different rules, let them provide the troops with appropriate basing.

Hmm. I see that, even though they're covering things like Swedes and Danish, Blue Moon is ignoring Spanish--and Portuguese. Same thing happened with Old Glory 25s. I wonder why?

Plenty to be getting on with!!cheers guys.

Yes indeed Extra C..I've played one game a long time ago and wasn't that pleased with it to be honest.but will retry n see.

cantbeatdavy27 Mar 2017 3:16 p.m. PST

Like the OOB ideas BTW

The Napoleon @ War system has Spanish authors, I believe they still have an army list for the Spanish as a free download on their website.

While linked to their rules system you might get some ideas for troop proportions and classifications for a generic army.
