Does anybody know the correct WWII terminology for those 3-tube arrangements used by the British to carry 2in mortar, 3in mortar and PIAT bombs around? It seems they are commonly referred to as "bomb carriers" but I am sure I have heard them referred to by what sounded more like an official designation, but can't recall… These things:

Hornswoggler: They were called "bomb carriers". Not overly imaginative but to the point. They were used for carrying 2" mortar bombs and PIAT bombs. Two such carriers were in a "bomb crates" or "transit chests" which were wooden boxes with metal and leather fittings. Your photo above shows both the bomb carrier on top and the transit chest/bomb crate below. Cheers and good gaming. Rod Robertson. |

Would 2" mortar bombs and PIAT bombs fit in the same carrier? If so, does that mean the PIAT was designed with this in mind? |

No. Piat rounds were 3 and a quarter inch diameter. 2 inch mortar rounds were (obviously) 2 inch diameter. The design process started using something based on a 2 inch mortar round. |

Two such carriers were in a "bomb crates" or "transit chests".. Thanks for confirming that – I had sort of guessed but have never found a photo of an open transit chest showing the carriers inside. Would 2" mortar bombs and PIAT bombs fit in the same carrier? I think I read somewhere(?) that 2in mortar bombs were packed 2 per tube, so 6 in a carrier of 3 tubes. 3in mortar and PIAT rounds just one per tube carried in 3's. And I think I saw a similar arrangement for 4.2in mortar bombs but just 2 bombs/tubes per carrier (presumably due to size & weight). |

Yes, 2 inch mortar rounds were packed 2 per tube. A 3 inch mortar was 81mm diameter so maybe piat bombs would fit their carriers. Dunno about the length though. |

75mm rounds also packed this way in a triangular package. |
