That will save us so much money. When lasers become more common it will be too dangerous to use planes on the battlefield. Thus no need to bother keeping up the plane arm rest.

I did read one sci-fi story were ground based lasers eliminated air warfare. The only planes left were stealth aircraft that fly at the upper layers of the atmosphere and did ground surveillance.

The entire premise of Hammer's Slammers and its tanks is based on that concept – that the series' powerguns are so powerful and accurate that any aircraft that can be seen… is scrap.

Way back in the 1980s during the SDI tests, we proved that you need roughly 25 megajoules of energy to blow up a missile. Any missile, since the laser was tested against both a Titan ICBM and a TOW ATGM. Took a 5 megawatt laser 5 seconds to blow up either one.

And the trick is getting that 5 seconds. Reality? Not very likely. So you need to up the energy delivered. And that's where the hard part lies…
