The Maryland and Virginia Rifle Regiment

-Authorized on 14 June 1775 (the Birthday of the US Army) with two Maryland and one Virginia independent rifle companies. The two Maryland companies were organized on 21 June and the Virginia company on 22 June.

-The regiment itself was authorized on 17 June 1776 and was organized ten days later (27 June) composed of the three original companies and six additional companies (two from Maryland and four from Virginia). The new companies were organized between 11-31 July.

-Part of the regiment was captured at Fort Washington on 16 November 1776 and the regimental organization was disbanded. The remaining Virginia personnel were transferred to the 11th Virginia Continental Regiment. The surviving Maryland personnel were reorganized as a company and attached to the 4th Maryland of the Continental Line.

-The unit was reorganized on 21 March 1779 as Rawlings' Independent Corps of three companies and it was assigned to the Western Department. It was disbanded on 1 January 1781 at Fort Pitt.
