What would be the best rules to adapt for aerial skirmishes and boarding actions using 2-4 aeronefs in the 18"-24" size range with 28mm figures, where movement would be entirely close range and mostly relative positioning changes?

Ironclads & Etherfliers, GASLIGHT, something else?

Neither I&E or G did it for some of my group. As a result we used modified Hordes of the Things for boarding actions and Aeronef for flyer v. flyer actions.

Have you looked at Imperial Skies by Brigade Models?

Personal logo miniMo Supporting Member of TMP17 Mar 2017 4:18 p.m. PST

Imperial Skies looks to be primarily fleet action.
Does it adapt well to skirmish & boarding?

Rumaging about, I found an old copy of Flagship Games' Pirates that looks like it would transfer easily to Aerneffing.

Did they ever release the Floaties & Sinkies supplement mentioned in the catalogue found in the box? Is 3rd Edition available anywhere? (Not showing up in Scalecreeps' links)

(I'll see if I can get this thread cross-posted to the Pirates board to see if there might be other Naval skirmish games suitable for adapting to the skies.)

I'm going to recommend Two Hour Wargames
Colonial Adventures + Lemuria
supplement to handle the boarding parties,
and NUTS! –Big Battles to handle the 'Nef vehicle rules.

I used this set-up to run a Cap'n Nemo & the Nautilus
vs. Her Majesties Steam Ship the Diamond a while ago.
I was really pleased with the flow of the game.

'Course. I'll own that THW is either 'Love'em or Hate'em'.

Flagship Games' Pirates + Floaties & Sinkies would work really well though.
I'm pretty sure Floaties was indeed released,
but Flagship did a massive reorganization about 5-10 year ago,
so no idea about availability.

If you are wanting to fight fairly large-to-table ships, and are all about the hand-to-hand, you might look at the basic rules a fellow in the Netherlands put up to share.

You can also oo and ah the ships. ;->=

I'm all about the 'simple and free.'

Is there a link to the Netherlands goodness?

Merde, I'm SURE I put it in there!

Being friends with the Pirates! authors, I'm pretty sure the floaties and sinkies supplement was published and then incorporated into the last edition of the rules. IIRC, last edition was the spiral bound rules, and the previous edition and the floaties and sinkies were stapled, if that helps identify them.

GASLIGHT has rules for the skirmishing as well as the fleet actions.

Buck, does the fleet action adapt well for just a few aeronefs at close quarters?

Here is some more stuff made by that crazy Dutchman.

I've copied the Dutch rules.

Found a Pirates 3rd Edition on EBay.

My pair of lasercut aeronefs from Crossover just shipped this morning!

I also have a lasercut ironclad from Sarissa and one from Darkops which will both be converted to flying mode!

Pictures will of course always be very much appreciated :)

Yes, there will be pictures ^,^

Same or different Crossover beauties? Alas, my kite lies half-built, looking accusingly at me as I pass.

I'm considering a thread 'Shame of the Beast: The Failed Projects.'

Oh don't do that Mr Beast,I'd have to add dozens of my own put off projects to it ;)

The slightly different variants of their new release, the Furious and Audacious.

I can hardly wait for you to complete them that I may heap scorn and derision on your vaunted competence… ;->=

Fair warning on the Crossover: take your time, think 'em through, pre-fit. I've no experience with Sarissa and Darkops.

Now, as a side note, I think we can agree that the GASLIGHT Fleet rules, like Aeronef, Imperial Skies, and similar, aren't useful to you EXCEPT as set up to one of your battles, but it seems to me one could adapt it's rules for Landships for what you seek.

I'll just go have a little re-read…

Good to know on Crossover fit-testing.

I have built a number of Sarissa's buildings and bridges before. I did test fit, but they all went together very nicely (fiddly the bridges though). This one looks air-worthy, at least after adding a deeper lift-wood hull, some rudders and propulsion….

Haven't tried Darkops yet, but this one looks almost aerodynamic, after similar re-fitting and a roofing job:
