I started out as a sci-fi gamer, with fantasy on the side. Somewhere along the way, I went more towards fantasy. D&D and Frostgrave really encouraged that shift.

Today, on my hobby table, I have the following:

1) Dark Ages Irish

2) English Civil War Irish

3) 17th century Japanese.

4) WW2 Japanese

In a "current projects" box somewhere,I have two more warbands for Frostgrave and some sci-fi stuff for FiveCore.

I have no idea how I became a historical gamer…

A friend of mine is swerving into fantasy gaming after years of being purely historicals :-)

I swore off black powder gaming for many years, now it's becoming my favourite period and I recently got the bug for samurai warfare.

Just possibly bashytubits has influenced some of your choices?

I've come to prefer historicals for human infanrty. Fantasy companies making characters and heroes. I think my favorite sets are the Frostgrave ones though. Splash any of their bits into another set and you've got gold.

Well, I started with ACW (the Airfix plastics), then ECW and WWII and currently on the painting table I have 5 dwarven Slayers (complete with orange hair) and a Chaos Slaughter priest (whatever that is)

To be fair, the Slayers were a present and I am painting the Chaos figure for a friend

Still, a long way from the Army of the Potomac!

Pretty much the same here… I started playing 40K, had 3-4 armies, 1 WFB army, and LoTR Rohirrm and Haradrim armys. Now 20 years later I have a Taifa Kingdoms army, an ECW Royalist army, a Saga warband, 2 Ronin Buntais, a 15mm Carthagenian DBA army under way and 17th/18thC Mughal army and several other small projects waiting in the wings.

I started as a fantasy gamer 35 years ago then became a historical gamer now do about an even split between sf and historical.

Started with historical gaming since the 70s. I am still doing history. Just once I played a game of LOTR, but I managed to resist the dark side and I am still doing history and only history.

It was time to turn from childish things.

Weasel14 Mar 2017 10:49 a.m. PST

Plot twist: Our history games were fantasy all along.

ROUWetPatchBehindTheSofa14 Mar 2017 12:10 p.m. PST

Started out with plastic napoleonics, but played WWII in plastic with a little WFB and Epic 40K on the side before getting into RPGs, before finding the one true faith which is 15mm sci-fi! Though I will admit to a large pile of contemporary Dark Age through Medieval plastic figures. I also have bunch of ECW Osprey's, which sooner or later may end in 'figures'.

Great War Ace14 Mar 2017 12:13 p.m. PST

When I started wargaming it was focused only on historical "realism". Right away I got corrupted into fantasy/medieval RPG. I've never separated the two clearly ever since. Especially when I realized much later that, as Weasel says, history (games) are fantasy: that is because largely history itself is a fantasy, a construct……….

Lion in the Stars18 Mar 2017 2:18 a.m. PST

I'm the same, I started out in 40k, but when Flames of War really started taking off I jumped into 15mm and Historicals pretty hard.

I have Napoleonics, WW2 (both historical and Weird), and even some Age of Sigmar in the painting queue.

Mithmee18 Mar 2017 9:40 a.m. PST

Thing is this can also happen the other way as well.
