Howdy folks,

I still cant decide on what models to buy (so many cool looking ships out there!), so I decided to indulge in a little creativity.

I've done many a scratch building project over the years, and tons of scenery, but this is my first attempt at spaceships… I am a little nervous at sharing, especially as I managed to complete the project by spending just over £5.00 GBP

Anyways, here is the fleet, please let me know what you think! –

thanks
Chris

Wow! They look really good!

Your space ships look great. And I really like the 10mm Ottamans, too!

nvdoyle11 Mar 2017 6:28 a.m. PST

That's a great use of found objects! The wall plugs work better than I might have expected.

Amazing, and while never had a space game love sci-fi but love scratch building

Dwindling Gravitas11 Mar 2017 6:51 a.m. PST

Fantastic! They look really good (though I'm not so sold on the wallplugs, but that's just me).

What exactly are these "phone connector thingies"? Something for landlines?

Project Vehemence11 Mar 2017 7:48 a.m. PST

Ha, thanks guys!
I was hoping they wouldn't appear cheap and tacky. You have all helped boost my confidence to try and bash out some more similar.

@Dwindling.. google 'Philex Phono Connector Kit', you should be able to figure them out by the photos. I'm not really sure what they are used for, I just saw them on a dusty shelf, untouched, in a DIY store!

Dwindling Gravitas11 Mar 2017 8:21 a.m. PST

Huh … I get it! Thanks PV!
Can't say I've ever seen them before, but then again, I haven't been looking…

At least now I know roughly which aisle to lurk in :-)

Zeelow11 Mar 2017 8:51 a.m. PST

thumbs up !!

mwindsorfw11 Mar 2017 9:05 a.m. PST

I've been a fan of dry wall anchors for ships for years.

MajorB11 Mar 2017 1:01 p.m. PST

those are really nice.

nvdoyle11 Mar 2017 3:44 p.m. PST

DG, those are going to be in the audio accessories aisle, I think in the US they're the RCA plug standard.

As for the wall anchors, I'd file off the mold lines and then paint, they'd be just fine. In fact, they're rather inspiring for very small scale vessels.

emckinney11 Mar 2017 4:39 p.m. PST

Some of those appear to be 3.5mm standard headphone/audio jack splices or adapters to RCA. 3.5mm connectors should work well on their own.

DIY fleets always provide a great deal of satisfaction, plus the added appeal of often costing very little.

These have been brilliantly executed, Chris! I particularly like the fact that unlike me, you've had the good sense to show restraint and not go over the top adding bits until each ship takes a week or so!

Lovely stuff.

Well done! You shouldn't be afraid to post something like that here!

Terrific stuff, and inspired usage of the phono connectors. I had no idea those could be had so cheaply.

It really is high time I made my long planned fleet of wall anchor vessels…

Psteinert16 Mar 2017 9:42 a.m. PST

Very inspirational!! Thank you.

Damn lovely! Only issue is seeing them against a proper 'black' table top.

That paint scheme seems so perfect against such a simple basic shape, though the portholes are what REALLY sell 'em.

These look Great!
I would've Never thought to use RCA jacks as space ships.

Lollipop stick bombers, cocktail stick fighters! ..thinking of replacing the sprue w/ wire, as they could be mistaken for different types of craft..
And I did. Looking at the Fleet, I thought the '2' bombers represented a Ftr. Sqdrn. & the other was a '4 engine Torpedo boat'.

Haven't done any 'scratch' work in yrs. When on a bits search, my 'mind set':
"I have no idea what Im looking for, but I will know it when I see it."

Lentulus23 Jun 2017 5:41 p.m. PST

Great advertisement for scratch-building

TheBeast Supporting Member of TMP15 Jul 2017 6:39 a.m. PST

"When on a bits search…"

After a recent chiding from someone who doesn't collect bits because of space and mess, I have to admit my search 'mind' usually has two thoughts:

Picking up a piece: 'I really did have a clear use for this. If only I could remember…'

'Avalanche!'

Any updates, PV? Mine is the third bit of thread-o-mancy, after all.

Doug
