I have been looking for a good book on Chickamauga. Which is the must have book written on this battle? I visited it three years ago and just now I want a good book on it. |

THIS TERRIBLE SOUND: THE BATTLE OF CHICKAMAUGA by Peter Cozzens |

I'll second Cozzens book. In fact I'd recommend any of Cozzens books. |

Cozzens made an appearance at Historicon a few years ago in Valley Forge while I was running my Chattanooga Campaign. I happened to have a copy of his book The Shipwreck of Their Hopes displayed on the table before the games began. He signed it for me and came by on several occasions during the convention to see what developed in the campaign game, which ran most of the weekend. He is a fine gentleman and is genuinely interested in we gamers. Obviously, another vote for This Terrible Sound. All his works are on my shelf. |

Thanks for this! Under $10. USD at Amazon. I live 4 miles from the battlefield and know very little about it…. (except that the good guys won!). Not for long though!! |

David Powell wrote a trilogy, A Mad Irregular Battle, Glory or the Grave, and Barren Victory. I can't recommend them highly enough. |

There's also The Maps of Chickamauga which is an atlas covering the Tullahoma Campaign, Rosecrans crossing of the Tennessee, and the battle in detail. link Cozzens This Terrible Sound is also excellent. Jim |

I have the first two Powell books also, haven't read them yet, but they seem to really compliment Cozzens! |

I have read Cozzens and the first of Powell's trilogy. Luckily I read them years apart. Cozzens is a great single volume account and read in conjunction with his other Western theatre books are some of the best written. Based on the first book, I think Powell offers some great analysis and incite and his trilogy made some day be regarded as the definitive account of the campaign. That being said, both books can be pretty dry at times but Powell's account made come out as a little more enjoyable once the action starts. |

There is an Osprey Campaigns book on the battle written by Robert R. Arnold, but I believe it is out of print. I have not seen it, so I can give no opinion on it, but I do like other books by that author. I thought I would mention it just in case. |

I have read all three of Powell's Chickamauga books. I think his analysis is solid and surpasses Cozzens. This Terrible Sound was my first serious Civil War battle study, but I think Powell's trilogy is better and will be hard to beat as the definitive series on the battle. |

I agree with others that the Powell trilogy is outstanding, but I would suggest Cozzens for a comprehensive single volume. |

Cozzens for sure – good choice |

Just be careful. Cozzen's analysis of Wood's decision to pull out of line is dated and not up to the latest research. |

I must thank all of you who recommended This Terrible Sound. I finished reading it today and it was AWESOME. It has to be the definitive Chickamauga book and I learned so much from it. Anyone interested in Chickamauga should read it ASAP. |
