Now that the rules have been out, and I purchased them, has anyone started using them for Ancients? I would like to use my Roman and Celt army using these rules. If some of you are already doing so can you tell me how you are doing it and any advice about how to use units for game play?

Sure, why not?

There was a version called Eagle Rampant set in the First Punic War in WSS that would fit the bill and should have all the stats for you to play with.

You can get it in PDF here: link

Or order a hard copy from them

There's also some discussion on Dan Mersey's LR forum, with links to some blogs with more details.

I am using LR as the tabletop rules for our Dux Britanniarum campaigns. It was pretty simple to crunch the stats and reproduce different types and qualities of units. Since my figures are element based (12-14 infantry or 5-7 cavalry, so it works out well), I did away with the 3" rule and introduced flank attacks, which gave players more reason to form a coherent battle line.

In short, yes it can work. I'm thinking of working up some stats for my son's Imperial Romans and German barbarians. I think the point systems (in both LR and Dragon Rampant) or more art than science, but they are good guidelines.

Cheers,

Christopher

WS&S 82 has the Chariot Rampant variant, if you'd like to go back a bit further in time and play New Kingdom Egyptian ect.

A very flexible set of rules!

I played a very anachronistic battle between my sons War of the Roses army and my 2nd Punic Carthaginians. It worked, but some of the ancient unit ratings were a bit weird. His archers slaughtered my army before it could really close ranks. Which isn't all bad because he had a lot of fun and is getting more into the hobby!

I am thinking of using Lion Rampant for Romans and Barbarians in 54mm. It would be a grand spectacle indeed!
