We have no lesser authority that Leonard Nimoy for telling us that it was Bilbo….Bilbo Baggins…the bravest little hobbit of them all.

But is this true ?

Sure he :

fought with the goblins!
He battled a troll!
He riddled with Gollum!
A magic ring he stole!
He was chased by wolves,
Lost in the forest,
Escaped in a barrel from the elf-king's halls.

Brave indeed. But was he the bravest ? Some might say that Frodo – having been pierced by a Morgul Blade and so knowing what he faced – still taking the Ring to Orodruin was in fact the bravest little Hobbit of them all.

Maybe.

Merry & Pippin were both, in their own ways, very brave.

But maybe it was another – how about Fatty Bolger ? He knew that bad things were coming for Frodo – and yet he stayed behind as "bait" to allow Frodo and the others to get a head start. That's brave.

What do you think ?

Maybe it was Samwise Gamgee. He knew he was always fated to be seen as the comic-relief, slow-witted sidekick, and as likely to be eaten, stabbed, or stomped as Frodo with none of the glory or renown, yet on he trudged, dutiful and steadfast. He volunteered for every dangerous errand with no more training or preparation than even Frodo received, without wizard pals or Elvish contacts or Dwarven mithril mail.

Merry, who knew what he was getting into, studied the maps, paid for the ponies, and got stuck trying to organize the hobbitry at arms while hoping Pippin would get back in time with the reinforcements. Pippin's a nice enough fellow, but too much of the British hussar in him--not aware enough of the danger to get full credit for the bravery.

Tolman Cotton and Farmer Maggot. Two tough old, salt of the earth types you don't mess with. Sort saw Tolman Cotton as The Shires version of John Wayne.

"What is a Leonard Nemoy?"

I cannot answer that completely, but I will not dispute his word.

I go with Sam, especially as he did bear the ring for a brief period.

Bilbo was pretty brave.

Brandobas "Bullroarer" Took. He rode a horse. Have you seen those things?

Also invented golf. And you've got to be brave to wear those pants.

Sam. All alone in Mordor, thinking Frodo is dead, picks up the Ring to carry on.

Sam is the true hero of the tale

but
altho he was truly loyal to his employer

he was motivated by fear
"Don't let him <Gandolf> turn me into anything…unnatural!"

I would have to go with Merry and Pippin
they went with Frodo because he was their friend

I knew somebody would go there.

Just glad it wasn't me. This time.

Merry stabbed the Witch King. I rest my case.

Coyotepunc and Hatshepsuut06 Mar 2017 9:10 p.m. PST

I think Sam was most heroic, but Meriadoc was certainy the most brave. He after the Witch King (the essence of Fear, personified) when he had every right and reason to run away. As mentioned above, he went just to be withbhis friends.

Brave and loyal.

Sam.

All that, and a good cook, too.

Another smile here. Have to laugh at the Otho choice.

Sam, when he isn't duelwelding swords and cutting down orccs and uruks like he was Master Samurai he's making gourmet stew out of hares.

fullerena08 Mar 2017 10:55 a.m. PST

Good old Banazīr Galpsi. He doesn't know much about riders in black, or magic rings, or orcs, but he knows his job. He's a gardener. And Shelob's just one more big bug that made the mistake of getting in his way.
