Do you play miniature wargames in the open air? |

Love doing 54mm ww2 in back yard |

Not since I was 12 (except for LRP). Not that I have anything against it. John T |

No but I plan to. As noted above 54mm needs a large space so would like to try the lawn. |

Only for our infrequent games matching the Plastic Army Men (various nationalities but primarily WWII US, UK, and German) versus the League of Plastic Dinosaurs, the War that Time Forgot! Only a vacant lot of suitable back yard will fit the scale and terrain of these heroic encounters. Tank vs Triceratops, infantry squad vs Brontosaur herd, Tyrannosaurs galore against the BEF! There can be only ONE survivor! |

Yes. I do organize "Flagstone Fleets" games during the summer: link However, since we plan on having a new patio, it might not happen anymore in the near future.

A few years ago there was guy who had a enormous outdoor game going, had it on my computer but lost it now. |
robert piepenbrink | 05 Mar 2017 4:58 a.m. PST |
Not with miniatures since I was maybe 12. And not at all since the Army stopped paying me to do it. |

No, it is 12 degrees outside. |

I have, a little tough on books or sheets. I have a nice yard. More likely to paint outside. |
Cosmic Reset | 05 Mar 2017 6:33 a.m. PST |
No, but I sometimes work on masters at our picnic table, which tends to fascinate the neighbor kids. |
Whirlwind | 05 Mar 2017 6:33 a.m. PST |
Yes. In the summer I sometimes take a 2'x2' or 3'x2' board outside and have a game. Me and a friend sometimes play X-Wing or Formula De in my local's beer garden. |

No. I have no idea why groups try to do things outside either (unless it is an outdoor activity to begin with). Outdoor events always have one of the following happen. Too Hot. Too Cold. Too Windy. Raining. Biting insects. |

Absolutely! "Funny Little Wars" almost demands it, but other rules, other subjects can lend themselves to al fresco gaming. Having a stand alone war games table is a help, and I may be on the point of dropping the hammer on my life-long planned sand table. Some things really ought to be tried at least once, and al fresco war games should be on that list, as surely as picnics, barbecues, and love making. Not EVERYTHING has to limited to four walls! Not since I was a child. But I don't know how much of an actual "wargame" it was at that stage. |

Many, many years ago, my friends and I would have naval battles in a school parking lot (on weekends) using Fletcher Pratt's rules. Good fun! |

I once played a WWII game in a church parking lot. It was 1/1200 scale. It was cool pulling out the 35 foot tape measure to figure out distances. Phil |

Best wargame I had was in my parent's garden in 1983. It was a commando raid on a German radar installation with 1/32 figures and Recon rules. All done solo on a beautiful sunny August day. Always wanted to do something like John Ruddles; I think an imagi-colonial thing with AIP figures would work well, but sadly I don't have six weeks of summer holidays were I can pick the best days any more. |
Henry Martini | 06 Mar 2017 2:18 p.m. PST |
If there's an argument in favour of wargaming outside it's wind; the enclosed atmosphere at many an indoor game quickly becomes highly noxious. |
Patrick Sexton | 06 Mar 2017 4:59 p.m. PST |
We have done so on my patio, though the games are still table bound. link |
14Bore | 06 Mar 2017 5:39 p.m. PST |
15mm figures outside would get lost, but have envisioned a whole house battle |
Oberlindes Sol LIC | 07 Mar 2017 5:15 p.m. PST |
Clean outdoor air is always better than interior air, especially in a hotel during a convention. On the other hand, wind will disturb many things like sails, flags, paper play aids, and even plastic figures, if the wind is strong enough. It also seems easier to lose things outdoors than indoors, but I'm not sure that there's any difference. |
