I am wondering if I have the French Line Inf. NCO badges correct.

Corporal: 2 red wool bars on each forearm.
Seg't.: 1 gold / yellow wool bar on red or is it gold
metallic lace on red wool? One on each
forearm.

Seg't. Major: As above but two bars on each forearm with
length of service chevrons also in yellow
wool or gold metallic lace. Gold lace on
shako.

So how close did I get?

There was a difference in early and later imperial French, while the service chevrons were initially read for all, later it became silver respecitvely gold for sergents upwards.

The "sardines" were according to button colour – yellow or gold for the line and white or silver for the light units – though early Napoleonic caporaux could have yellow was well, as seen on a Lejeune painting on Somo Sierra

When "they" say gold is it gold metallic lace or golden coloured wool?

From items in the Musee de l'Armee in Paris it is gold (or silver) metallic lace.

yes it is gold metalic – or silver metallic lace, often piped in red.

I think Flashman14 is showing Guard sleeves, to judge by white cuff slashes. Napolun site got it wrong calling these Line look

@ vW

What is the difference between the caporal and the sergent-major in that picture? They seem the same, with the sergent having fewer stripes than either?

If I might try. The one on the left is a slightly different colour…aurore. The colour of the dawn. A pink orange (German Orange in Vallejo).

The sarnt major is gold lace!

See Flashman's posting for the Guard sleeves. Same lace difference
