Looking for good books on the Atlanta campaign with detailed battle descriptions, like Peter Cozzens books. Any suggestions appreciated.

Albert Castel Decison in the West. Terrific book.

Seconded, best single book on the source!

The Day Dixie Died by Ecelbarger on the Battle of Atlanta and Hess's Kennesaw Mountain both excellent.

Castel for sure.

I also recommend Castel, but I'm not sure it has the detailed battle descriptions thedrake is asking for. Here are my recommendations. Sorry, there is not one book.

The Battle of Resaca by Philip L Secrist
The Hell-Hole in Georgia: Sherman vs. Johnston May 22 – June 2, 1864 by Jeffrey S. Dean
The Battle of Pickett's Mill: Along the Dead Line by Brad Butkovich (me!)
Kennesaw Mountain June 1864: Bitter Standoff at the Gibralter of Georgia by Richard A. Baumgartner
Kennesaw Mountain: Sherman, Johnston, and the Atlanta Campaign by Earl J. Hess
To the Gates of Atlanta: From Kennesaw Mountain to Peach Tree Creek, 1-19 July 1864 Robert D. Jenkins Sr.
The Battle of Peach Tree Creek: Hood's First Sortie, July 20, 1864 by Robert D. Jenkins Sr.
The Day Dixie Died: The Battle of Atlanta by Gary Ecelbarger
Slaughter at the Chapel: The Battle of Ezra Church, 1864 by Gary Ecelbarger
I don't think there is a single book treatment on Jonesboro yet.

And for an overview to fill in the gaps (Cassville, Jonesboro, etc.)
The Campaign for Atlanta by William R Scaife
Decision in the West: The Atlanta Campaign of 1864 by Albert Castel

Castle, hands down.

War Like The Thunderbolt, The Battle and Burning of Atlanta by Russell S. Bonds is good too.

I also left out What the Yankees Did to Us: Sherman's Bombardment and Wrecking of Atlanta by Stephen Davis. Its an in-depth study of the actual siege and aftermath. No real battle, but a good book to wedge in there between Ezra Church and Jonesboro.

Thanka cor all the suggestions.

Give it a few years…the same chap who wrote the excellent three part work on Chickamauga is starting to research the Atlanta Campaign…could be a four part series when all is said and done!

Buckeye, I believe that author is Dave Powell.
