Okay, so the days of my youth spending Sundays watching "World Beyond" has caught up with me and encouraged me to spend my tax refund on a new project…Kaiju gaming! I'd like some rules suggestions so I can put my newly acquired S.H. Monster Arts and Revoltech beasties to work crushing and destroying things. I'd like something that includes human forces as well (tanks, aircraft, giant maser cannons etc.). Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Being a fan of Ganesha games I recommend their Mighty Monsters rules. They give a satisfying feel to giant monsters vs puny humans or other giant monsters.

I bought, but haven't yet had a chance to play, Mighty Monsters from Ganesha Games. This is a derivative of Song of Blades and Heroes, and looks great. The monsters activate as components: you roll to activate the legs to move and stomp, the arms to smash and throw, the head to breath fire or bite, etc. It does have provisions for both conventional and super science human units, iirc.

Definitely worth a look.

I'll second any of Ganesha's rules.

However, this one immediately came to mind. link

I also use Mighty Monsters, but Monster Island and Giant Monster Rampage are some alternative options too. I have them all, and while I use MM, the others also provide great scenario ideas or targets for your monsters. Monster Island and its supplements are also laced with great (and cheesey) quotes from kaiju films ("Someday I'd like to show you around a monster-free Tokyo").

Mighty Monsters also has the benefit of meshing with Ganesha's Samurai Robot Battle Royale rules, for your giant robot or Pacific Rim gaming.

Thank you gentlemen for all of the suggestions, I've just picked up MM, GMR and Kaiju Kaos for a look see.

@boy wundyr x: Who make Monster Island and where can I get it?

boy wundyr x03 Mar 2017 12:22 p.m. PST

Firefly Games (had to look it up again myself): link

Check out the Products Support page too, there are some MI freebies there.

If you go with MM, I have all the classics statted up. MM has many of them in the rules already with alternative names that sometimes take a bit of decoding, so I started with that and then tweaked them a bit and filled in the blanks.

Two warnings about Monster Island…

1st, iirc, it's just I-go-you-go, roll to hit, do damage, maybe stun, repeat until someone runs out of hit points. While there are stats for interesting things, game play isn't very interesting. I sold mine.

2nd, when I tried to buy something from Firefly online I got nothing and could not contact them by email. I paid, but couldn't get in touch with anything. Be sure and talk to someone there or someone who has ordered recently, they seemed defunct to me.

Will your stats show up on your blog, boy wundyr x? I made a royal mess of it with MI. Thinking I'd like to give MM a whirl.

Monster Island is what I'm running at Little Wars. For more meat and variety in your Kaiju GMR has that.

My play of Monster Island was with a modified game, done by someone else (he had 8" monsters) who used to post on here (JHolden I think), not sure if his mods can be found. I bought my rules about a year ago ok from Firefly and things were ok, not sure when you tried Andrew.

@JCBJCB – I'll see if I can get them up there as a pdf, otherwise if you want to pm me with an e-mail address, I can share them that way too. Or for basic members, chrisrobinson AT nexicom DOT net will reach me. It'll probably be Monday before I can get them out though.

FWIW I just got Irys (Gamera 3), Ultraman, Alien Magma, and some other Ultraman opponent I can't identify, and they haven't been statted up yet but I'll work on them eventually.
