I want to add a unit of 28mm Italian (are there any others?) Bersaglieri to my Very British Civil War collection. This means 1936-1939 time frame. Nobody makes a good Bersaglieri figure which should be running with rife at the trail. Thus I am trying to make a conversion from other figures. They would not be wearing sun helmet in England, so must choose from metal helmet or the classic wide brim hat. Which should it be?
If some company does make this figure, please let me know. Thanks |

The helmet. These guys had some experience of the Spanish Civil War with shelling, the reason for helmets. |

Is that group of signs in the background typical of road signs in Italy? |

Askari Miniatures has Bersgliari running with rifle similar to the photo, but they're in tropical uniform, so shorts instead of pants. link |

In '36-'39 you are entirely justified in using the M33 helmet. However, if these guys are supposed to be plausibly deniable "volunteers," then they would probaby not wear the distinctive cockerel feathers. |

The Italian troops involved in the Spanish Civil War were officially "volunteers" but wore full Italian uniforms, including Bersagliere head dress. See here YouTube link about 32 minutes in. |

Thanks all for the good advice. I will go with the helmet. GOM, yes I know about those warlord figures but they're not running at the trail. Nice skirmish fighting poses however. I have some of these to use as dismounted motorcycle riders. If only warlord made bersaglieri motorcyclists. I had to buy German ones and will replace their heads.
Chouan -- Great video on history of Italy. There were nice pics of bersaglieri motorcycles at that spot you note. In the first minute of the film when Il Duce is speechify there were some good shots of bersaglieri on bicycles with broad hats and feathers. I need some of those too. But with helmet. I've seen pictures of cyclist troops with folded bicycle in backpack. Those would look cool. Somebody makes a terrific collection of these guys in 20 mm. Too bad I have 800 figures already in 28 mm :-) Paul – – thanks for the suggestion but I do need long pants. Redoubt makes the perfect figure for the boxer rebellion, but sun helmet and baggy pants. |
