English/British gunners take aim as French forces prepare to advance. Spanish Succession game using Neil Thomas rules.

Seeing those figs makes me want to get into the period. Thanks for sharing and I would like to see more!

Lovely painting and as rustymusket says a real advert for the period. I particularly like the painting of the red coats. Any hints as to how this was done?

Thank you for the kind comments. I took more photos of the game yesterday but most of them didn't turn out very well. I guess I was too excited because I actually won – a rare event indeed.

I use an old school method of painting, I suppose because I'm old. Its sometimes called the flow or stain method.

The red is a craft paint, Americana Country Red mixed one to one with Americana Burnt Sienna diluted with three or four parts water, stained/washed over Krylon white primer. The idea is to keep it fairly thin so it flows over the raised portions of the sculpt and settles more into the creases. The raised parts with little coverage become the highlights.

I then go back and roughly shade the creases etc. with one part Country Red mixed with two parts Burnt Sienna and one or two parts water. Any medium red mixed with burnt sienna would probably work.

Although it takes a little practice but not much, its more complicated to write down than it is to do.

I hope this helped.

Thanks Big Red. It's refreshing to read about painting techniques other than black undercoat followed by three colour method.
