Just curious, what rules are you guys and gals using for your 15mm scifi, and how big are your battles, fig wise.

John Leahy Sponsoring Member of TMP20 Feb 2017 7:06 p.m. PST

Fubar. 200+ infantry and 31 vehicles.

I've been thinking of using Beyond the Gates of Antares.

Generalstoner4920 Feb 2017 7:11 p.m. PST

Tomorrow's war.

Buckeye AKA Darryl20 Feb 2017 7:25 p.m. PST

Tomorrow's War as well. I own a few others, but not that enamored with them. One that looks good, and would be even smaller in scope than TW is Evil Bear's Oscar Sierra Charlie…a near future set. Not a lot in the way of sci-fi, but they do cover hard suits.

Irish Marine20 Feb 2017 7:44 p.m. PST

Tomorrow's War

Weasel20 Feb 2017 7:56 p.m. PST

I play around the platoon level wit various support.

Primarily use my own rules (Fivecore, No stars in sight, Clash on the fringe) and the venerable but still fantastic Stargrunt 2 (from ground zero games).

We used to play 5150 as our main game but my group drifted more towards Stargrunt.

Rich Bliss20 Feb 2017 8:04 p.m. PST

Striker III. Biggest battle so far was about 60 stands total, half infantry and half vehicles.

Mako1120 Feb 2017 8:20 p.m. PST

D10 FUBAR.

TNE230020 Feb 2017 8:21 p.m. PST

CT/AHL/Striker

Brad Brown20 Feb 2017 9:47 p.m. PST

I like Gruntz for 15mm sci-fi games.

Our biggest battle was about fourteen vehicles on a side, with a couple of infantry squads thrown in for good measure. That battle took about two hours.

A local variant of Bolt Action

Weasel20 Feb 2017 10:45 p.m. PST

I was surprised it took this many posts for someone to mention Gruntz, it's super popular :-)

Haven't played in a while but second Gruntz !

Hammer's Slammers: The Crucible.

Off hand, I can't quite put my finger on why, though wink

My own. A company a side.

D6 Junkie21 Feb 2017 8:03 a.m. PST

Thanks guys, going to look into a few of those rules.
Gotta get my guys on the field, eventually

Logain21 Feb 2017 8:39 a.m. PST

Weasel is being modest. TW is what we use for larger games, Weasel's Five Core is great for a handful of figures and a small table. Great gateway game.

Hammer's Slammers: The Crucible and Tomorrow's War.

ROUWetPatchBehindTheSofa21 Feb 2017 10:55 a.m. PST

Fubar, forces meaured in platoons / TW, forces measured in squads.

Weasel21 Feb 2017 10:58 a.m. PST

D6 Junkie – best thing you can do is just to get playing, then worry about the details later.
15mm scifi is wonderful :-)

Logain – Thanks!

vicmagpa121 Feb 2017 11:54 a.m. PST

Our group uses FUBAR. But I use THUD. My home grown rules.

Von Trinkenessen21 Feb 2017 12:47 p.m. PST

I use G-Cav GZG's original set from back in the day with the 25th anniversary amendments by me.

kmfrye21 Feb 2017 2:42 p.m. PST

StarGrunt II and Striker II

Weasel21 Feb 2017 4:15 p.m. PST

Hooray for Stargrunt :-)

We did actually play Striker a bit but I ended up selling off the books, since it was a bit too much work for my friends.

wolvermonkey21 Feb 2017 7:32 p.m. PST

Gruntz or USEME.

John Leahy Sponsoring Member of TMP21 Feb 2017 7:36 p.m. PST

I tried Gruntz. Loved the army designer! The rules were ok. Just not at the scale I want. Not a fan of 2d6 either.

Tgunner21 Feb 2017 8:20 p.m. PST

FUBAR and Stargrunt for me.

Lion in the Stars21 Feb 2017 11:46 p.m. PST

Tomorrow's War and Stargrunt, max of about 50 troops per side.

I've threatened to play Dirtside in 15mm to handle multiple-company per side battles.

BaldLea22 Feb 2017 12:50 a.m. PST

Gruntz for quick scenario driven games. Fireteam Andromeda for a bit more crunch.

Personal logo miniMo Supporting Member of TMP22 Feb 2017 8:41 a.m. PST

If I had the 15mm figures, I'ld still be using: BattleTech Alpha Strike, OGRE, Rivets, and the Awful Green Things From Outer Space!

10mm Wargaming22 Feb 2017 8:46 a.m. PST

I would recommend Future War Commander Rules. Hope it helps.

Take care

Andy

+1 for Hammer's Slammers; big games with lots of tanks grin

Ralph Plowman24 Feb 2017 2:24 p.m. PST

Hey Von Trinkenessen, I'm really keen to see what G-CAV is like. Are your 25th anniversary amendments a stand alone set or modifications to the original rules? Is it possible to see them please?

Thanks
Ralph

Sorry not to get back to you sooner Ralph, but have been busy painting landsknechts for our Salute game.
Basically its mods, updates and ideas to the original rules with the Mantra if it slows it down throw it out.
About 10 – 15 years ago we had a eureka moment when we realised we were not playing scifi or moderns but 1980's sci fi so having seen an army ad on tv where a squaddie throws a desert eagle drone into the sky we introduced Drones wholesale using the produced drones and full thrust fighters singly based as the small recon drones.

Expanded range of weapons and various essays on different types of alien excluding the basic xenomorphs.
Ralph are you going to be at Salute, Lincombe Barn TTS or Devises as I can assemble a copy of the original rules with the additional work for you (mostly not held electronically).
regards
Guy T

Ralph Plowman03 Mar 2017 2:42 p.m. PST

No problem at all Guy, thanks for getting back!

That's an interesting point you make. The rules are less futuristic the older they are. Maybe we should play them with figures from back then too :)

I won't be at Salute, but have been meaning to go to Lincombe Barn for a few years and not made it yet. I'l definitelyl come along this year though. Look forward to seeing what you've done with the rules.

Thanks
Ralph

Quadrant 13.

seldonH06 Mar 2017 8:26 a.m. PST

Victory Decision Future Combat for platoon level games

Strike Legion for larger actions

Hammer's Slammer The Crucible as the source book for the setting ( I can just look at that book for hours :) )

John Leahy Sponsoring Member of TMP13 Mar 2017 11:38 a.m. PST

Curious what thoughts you have about Quadrant 13. I REALLY wanted to get into these rules as I am a fan of TFL's systems in general. However, I rarely see comments about anyone playing the rules.

Thanks.

Kristoph09tailz01 Apr 2017 12:44 p.m. PST

Gruntz! But a few mates have some home brewed hybrid thing as well which is super cool.
I've enjoyed the unit builder and the missions for gruntz alot- it lends itself quite well to a campaign which I am in the process of writing/ planning.
Have you ever wanted to make your own troops and or empire? Gruntz baby.

infojunky01 Apr 2017 3:09 p.m. PST

Right now Azhanti High Lightning/Striker crossed with Cepheus Engine (a OGL version of Traveller).

Sentepid10 Apr 2017 11:36 p.m. PST

Hi guys. Great suggestions here. Can anyone advise me which of these is also geared to have the figures on group bases, like FoW? I want to have fireteams operating in this way rather than single figures

John Leahy Sponsoring Member of TMP11 Apr 2017 12:30 p.m. PST

I mounted mine on metal washers (20mm ) and use Alternative armies bases that they fit into. I use the 4 slots per base as I mainly use 8 man squads. Bought about 40 to 50 of the stands. Use em for scif and WWII.

Thanks.

seldonH12 Apr 2017 12:59 p.m. PST

Victory Decision Future Combat has rules for fire teams based like in FoW ( it has rules for either having your guys based in groups or individually, all units have stats for both Alternatives )..

Strike Legion uses fire teams because it is aimed at larger actions than platoon level

The Crucible has rules for infantry based in teams

Francisco

Logain12 Apr 2017 4:11 p.m. PST

Alien squad leader, Future War Commander & Five core company command also have fire team basing like FOW.
