"Engineers at Brigham Young University have developed an origami-like, collapsable shield capable of stopping bullets fired by pistols and revolvers, including the 9 mm, .357 Magnum and .44 Magnum. The shield can be folded up like an umbrella, making it easier to transport. The bulletproof shield can be deployed in just five seconds. "We worked with a federal special agent to understand what their needs were, as well as SWAT teams, police officers and law enforcement, and found that the current solutions are often too heavy and not as portable as they would like," Larry Howell, professor of mechanical engineering at BYU, explained in a news release. "We wanted to create something that was compact, portable, lightweight and worked really well to protect them."…" Main page link Amicalement Armand

First armor, now shields. For the love of Odin, I hope we can bring back swords and battle axes next! |

Sure thing, I'll just get the team working on how to attach chain saws to the swords and axes. Will that work for you? :) Edit: Oh my. I think I got too excited there, had to edit three times to correct spelling errors. |

Considering that the "improved" version weighs 55 pounds (25 kilos for civilized people), I don't think that their use of the word "shield" is invoking the knightly variety so much as portable cover like a mantlet. Their suggestion of putting them in schools is pure stupidity, since undefended fortifications present no meaningful obstacle. |

Well I was hoping that they'd worked out how to make John Steeds bulletproof umbrella (complete with sword in the handle!) . I am dissapoint. 25 kilos isnt exactly handy is it?

More of a Pavise than a shield at that weight. |
