Hi everybody,

That's a call to your wisdom and experience. I'm planning to retake an old RCW project in 1/72 with the foolish hope to finish it.

I would like to know what books and/or other sources you can recommend to have an overall view of the conflict. I've got a general view of the period and I know the principal factions and actors, but at one one point it 's too chaotic and would be great to have solid references about the operations to clear up a bit the things and if I can have some pictures and illustrations to get the inspiration flow, better!!

I'm aware ofToo Fat Lardies material, god save the Lard!
The Pigmy War site, a gold mine.
The Osprey are not good. a pity
and I've got illustrations from russian sites.

Thanks a lot in advance for any hint.

I'd give a big thumbs up to Mark Plant's Pygmy Wars website.

From there you can find relevant sources.

I have a large number of the Gauntlet Publications (Deryabin, translated by Hillman) which are excellent and available via The Military History Bookshop in the Uk.
tmhbs.com

This will give information on specific theatres with illustrations of uniforms, weapons and armour.

The Osprey Essential History book gives a much more generalised overview which might help you narrow down your geographical area of interest before you invest in the theatre specific books.

The gauntlet books are nice. Mark is a wealth of information on the topic. I've got a few books at home on the RCW, but I can't recall titles. I will post later.

I mentioned the Osprey as "no good" I was talking about the 2 Men-at-arms on White snd Red Armies.
I wasn't aware of The Essentiel History book, thanks Giles.

Although very dated (last updated in 2007), this old web page of ours should at least give you a strating point.

I thought the Gauntlet books were through OMM now?

Anyway, here's a few others worth considering:

EM Halliday, The Ignorant Armies and When Hell Froze Over (a revised reprint of the former) for the Allied intervention in the North

Peter Hopkirk, Setting the East Ablaze and several others, for the war in Central Asia

Norman Davies, White Eagle Red Star for the Russo-Polish War

Peter Hopkirk, Setting the East Ablaze and several others, for the war in Central Asia

Heh, I was keeping it KISS, otherwise there's tons of books I could recommend like Hopkirks !

best choose a theatre, and then drill down into the more obscure stuff that often costs and arm and a leg !

Most of my books are on the American Intervention. Other than those mentioned above, I have the following:

The Bloody White Baron by James Palmer
The Shadow of the Winter Palace by Edward Crankshaw
Red Victory: A History of the RCW by W. Bruce Lincoln
The Day They Almost Bombed Moscow by Dobson and Miller
Between War and Peace by Carol Melton
Russian Sideshow: America's Undeclared War by Robert Willett

Russia 1904-1924: The Revolutionary Years by Eric Baschet has a lot of good period photographs.

A good place to start would be the TMP Russian Civil War board – loads of useful info there TMP link
