Hesitation is not really clear. If you roll the Discard number the roll value becomes a '0'. But if you still add the modifiers (+2 for heavy cavalry and +3 for light cavalry) it sounds like you do not hesitate. The problem is the statement:

"If a unit intending to enter Bad Going fails to move, it will hesitate."

Well it won't fail to move if there is ever a positive modifier (cavalry, infantry in column).

It sounds like perhaps you are supposed to see if you roll the Bad Going number, and if you do, the opponent gets to react. After the reaction you move the amount rolled (with the roll counting as a '0' if you failed the Bad Going roll).

I think the rule should read:

If a unit intending to enter Bad Going discards it roll, it will hesitate.

Of course, all of that depends upon what your intent is. As it stands now, cavalry will never hesitate.

Cheers!

I updated it to read that if the die is discarded, the modifiers are not applied, so your interpretation is correct.
If the die roll falls within the discard range, hesitate, regardless of unit type.

It was written the opposite of the way it should, in the first draft that was uploaded.

We're experimenting with changing hesitation to the top end of die (5 and 6 instead of 1 and 2) but the effect should ultimately be the same.

Thanks and sorry for making you subscribe to another board. I was not sure where to put this given that the rules are semi-universal.

Actually I like hesitation being the low end of the die. It fits better with … well, hesitating. You either go in like gangbusters (high roll) or you hesitate (low roll).

Either way, I look forward to an update, some reviews and battle reports.

If I don't have a game this weekend, I may give them a whirl.

That was the initial thought: Either the troops dawdle in the woods or they "act with celerity" and burst through.

I saw a couple of AAR's posted online the other day nad I've gotten quite a bit of mail so we'll see how it all shapes up.

Quite a few updates in the works though of course there's always the old question of what updates make the public beta and what gets reserved for the final version.

I know we have heroes and campaigning for the full one.
