Hello TMP and paint experts! I have question on the best approach to complete black belting of 1806 Prussian fusiliers ( ABs) for the battalions of Hohenlohe's Army, who have black lapels ( IE. btns with black facings)? thank you in advance for your "tried and true" advise. MG |

Allways the same – deep black base and dark grey hilights. |

If you're worried about distinguishing between the two, add a little grey to the lapel color and a little blue to the belt color. |

@ Rich Bliss Do you have any Pics as to what this would look like? thanks MG |

Not at hand. I'll see if I can come up with some. |

Use charcoal for the black facings, black for the belts. |

All good. But hitting the belting with a satin finish after you've matted the casting also helps sometimes. |

Highlight the belts just once, do the facings twice. |

I'd go with Rich but the other way around (horses for courses). I would go for the cloth having a warmer feel so I'd highlight with a bluey grey black and highlight the belts with a whitey grey. Both have white in them, only one has the blue. This probably isn't the best pic, but it is the method I use on black horses.
The difference is slight, but distinct. |

@ Olicana I will try that strategy Curious… in your picture who is the flag maker? thanks every one! MG |

I have seen reenactors for Brunswick. Their uniform is may black while the belts come out as lighter (i.e dark gray). |

When painting use Paynes Grey (Delta Ceramcoat) [a extremely dark grey, almost black] for cloth, Flat Black for leather belts, Gloss Black for glass buttons |

Flags by me – downloads and photocopies from various places, over-painted in enamels. When I started the three armies (Russian, Prussian and Austrian) they were supposed to muster about 26 units each and not all would have flags (e.g. Grenz, grenadiers, some hussars, artillery and so on) so maybe 50 flags to do by hand. Then I decided to double up (162 units – 2600+ figs). I like doing flags by hand for a change of scene but, if I had thought I'd have to do over 90, I would have gone for commercial ones at the start. Thankfully they are all finished – never again!

I bought a couple of different Vallejo grey shades, black grey, panzer grey and panzer uniform, and use a different one for the straps then the facings. |

I ended up using black grey Vallejo to outline the black belts..at least the eye catches the outlining and distinguishes belting vs. lapels. Er, impressive 7YW army there, by the way!! |

@Olicana, every so often I look at my figures and think, they're pretty good. Then I see photos like yours and realise what an amateur I still am! Seriously impressive! |
