"Like many nations, Japan wanted to have a light amphibious reconnaissance tank. The idea came up in the 1920s when the country purchased the French AMP amphibious half-tracked armoured car. In 1928, two amphibious armoured cars based on the Vickers-Wolseley were built, but what Japan needed was specifically an amphibious tank. This is where the sad story of the SR series of tanks begins.

The SR series of tanks designed by Mitsubishi engineers was meant to implement all sorts of novelties that were not previously used in Japanese tank building. The main requirement from the army for these tanks was a weight limit: no more than 4000 kg.

The first prototype was build in 1934, named SR-I I-Go (Suiriku-Ryoyo I). Essentially, this was an SS-Ki engineering vehicle, modified with amphibious equipment. Each side of the experimental amphibious tank had four bogeys (8 doubled road wheels in pairs), three return rollers, a front idler and a rear drive sprocket with a small-link type track made from steel single-tooth links…"

I'm sticking with IJF AFVs were no where near as "good" as most other nations. And yes, I'm well aware of everything that is said in the link. But bottom line, they were old tech, easily defeated with a .50 cal. Not too many MBTs/AFVs in WWII could be destroyed that way.

Fair enough, Ralph. But all those glib generalisations are a distortion: all Italians surrendered, The Americans were poorly trained & spiritless infantry, the Soviets only used 'steam roller" tactics.

There's more to WW2 than what's in the movies.

Agree… mostly of the movies sucks…

I have to agree with both Ralph and ochoin, ainīt I diplomatic?

The Japanese did produce some good tanks for the time, but unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your point of view), they continued to use them long past the sale by date.

Texas Jack13 Feb 2017 4:08 a.m. PST

make that sell by date. grin I'm home with the flu and my brain is functioning even worse than usual.

REALLY !?!??! So here again, you try to allude to I'm stupid, uninformed, misinformed, ignorant, etc., about any topic. I post on … And I only watch movies.

I told you on another thread, that I don't have a list of all the literature, books, journals, etc. I have read throughout my life. For you or anyone else.

And I've wargamed many, many periods, scales, etc., since I started gaming in the '60s. Your next standard move is to claim I make outrageous comments about any one but Americans & Euros. Then claim I'm a bigot and racist, etc. Your attacks["stalking"?"] are getting old … very old.

I'll probably get DH'd again … and you get away free … Stand procedures …

Hope you get better soon my good friend!. (smile)

My good friend Legion… don'w follow that path… please!.

Thanks Armand, and I also agree with your advice to Legion.

Ralph, you read an awful lot into posts: stuff that isn't there. Surely people are allowed to disagree with you?

To actually get back to the topic rather than fulminate & rail against the system, clearly no-one can claim Japanese armour was on par with a German 'Big Cat' but the very first tank Vs tank encounter between the US & the Japanese was a Japanese victory.

You have to acknowledge such rather than just a blanket condemnation.
