I have now started on painting a small unit of Cazadores. I am finding them quite difficult to paint, or rather, look effective, more as a consequence of their drab uniform rather than any complications with the detail. You can find more in my blog here:

I guess brown is brown and I'll have to accept that!

I think you did a pretty good job!

Brown is indeed terribly dull no matter what you do. There are Prussian hussars who wore brown, which seems to me to defeat completely the point of being a hussar.

Thanks for the post. I also have these figures and your research is useful. In reality, since these were drably uniformed units on purpose, they defied the common conceptions of beautifully uniformed figures. In my opinion, there is little to be done beyond what you have so far and these will clearly represent the units as dressed on the day. It is clear that you enjoy painting and place importance upon representing the unit as accurately as possible. Well done.

My only suggestion would be to either have the pants a slight shade darker or lighter. Light can play some interesting tricks on the eye when it comes to color. Anyone who has painted figures with all white uniforms can tell you about it. a very light shade of gray can look white. Although, to be honest, what you have is fine.

paint your base around the shoes green.

They look just fine to me.
While the block paint and dip is fast, I would paint the uniforms a base of burnt umber, high light with medium brown, and one more with medium brown cut with pale yellow.
