We did the Spanish thread but what about their neighbors to the West?

Anyone have Portuguese armies? What do you like about them?

They're fun to paint. When I did a huge Peninsular commission a few years back it was a nice change to paint them after all the British and Spanish units. The Portuguese are somewhat easier than the others. Also, the 15mm Old Glory sculpts were excellent- very, very crisp and clean.

I don't think many of us will have wholly Portuguese armies, but Wellington had so many of them that you can't really have a Peninsula army without about 1/3 Portuguese.

They make a change from painting redcoats and the flags are nice.

Their cavalry make British cavalry look good.

Cacadores in brown are fun.

As Footslogger noted, one of the great things about Portuguese is that painting them gives you a break from painting Brits!

Granted, if you have a sizable French army, you probably don't need to paint any more blue uniforms, but these are really quite simple and elegant.

Not to mention the Cacadores are even better in brown.

In terms of playing them, they are excellent infantry.

The cavalry was one of the few things I remember fondly of playing Empire in that they were DUB (decidedly undistinguished battle-cavalry) and you never knew if they were going to run away (granted very likely) or charge like cuirassiers (not likely, but did happen now and again). If you have that sort of randomization in your preferred game system, then the cavalry alone make them worthwhile.

We're not allowed to say "No Portuguese", but, no Portuguese.

They don't get dead drunk like the British every time they find a wine cellar?

Old Contemptibles01 Feb 2017 1:22 p.m. PST

The British.

Cacadores. Obviously…

Yes. AB – fast to paint relative to the British.

Still hoping that AB will add cavalry, flank companies skirmishing and artillery crew to their Portuguese range.

I agree they break up the solid walls of red. Also their flags are unique.

And usually no one else has them.
