Series 9: Episode 4 : Down Among the Dead Men (54:50) DC Ben Jones: I mean here we are, busting a gut to find whoever killed Martin Barrett, when everyone's glad he's dead. On the way, we have to harass old boys like Jack Fothergill. DCI Tom Barnaby: Whereas you think he should be given a medal for cheating the Chancellor of the Exchequer? DC Ben Jones: He should certainly be mentioned in Dispatches. DCI Tom Barnaby: Wake me up if I doze off, will you? Yes, sir. ---- By my count, that's one mention in 45 episodes giving Jack Fothergill only a 2% chance of even being mentioned in dispatches. |

The bodycount in Midsomer can't be far off some of the bigger battles in the Sudan :) |

This would probably have more impact if I knew who Jack Fothergill was, lol! |

Jack Fothergill was a one-off character. I just thought it was funny that the coppers (no offense meant-the show uses this word a lot) were talking about medals and dispatches. I counted 45 episodes leading up to this episode and just made a wild accusation about the percentage of being mentioned in dispatches in today's world. It's basically nonsense. It just reminded me about how hard it was to be mentioned in dispatches in TSATF. In my 1979 TSATF version, the enlisted man has to survive a 6+ enemy figure close combat action, without taking a hit, and then get a 6 on a D6. I am not sure what the procedure is in later versions. |
