"Two United States Air Force B-2 bombers attacked Islamic State training camps outside of Surt, Libya, overnight, the Pentagon said on Thursday.

Military analysts were assessing the impact of the strikes, but officials said it was possible that dozens of Islamic State fighters may have been killed.

The Pentagon's Africa Command announced on Dec. 19 the official end of air operations against the Islamic State, also known by the acronyms ISIS or ISIL, in Surt, the group's coastal stronghold, after conducting 495 strikes against truck bombs, heavy guns, tanks and command bunkers there.

But the need to carry out additional strikes reflected the resilience of the Islamic State in Libya. While the group was driven out of Surt last month, the Islamic State still has several hundred fighters who have dispersed across Libya and pose a threat to the country, its neighbors and potentially Europe, according to American officials and the Africa Command…"

That's right. They told us ISIS was destroyed in Libya. I forgot it amongst all the other stories about ISIS being destroyed here, there and everywhere.

Man the propaganda machine is really broken badly these days.

It would be a lot cheaper, and more effective, to hire a platoon of Mercs to go hunt for them.

Executive Outcomes part 2? That'd make for quite the international law mess I am sure, though it'd probably be effective.

Nah … JDAMs, Hellfire, etc., is more effective in this case, IMO. And there are some legalities involved with using Mercs/PMCs, etc. The B-2s and Drone follow up is not cheaper, but very quick, low risk and "clean" … I like quick and "clean" …

No more international law issues I suspect, than dropping bombs on them from aircraft, and probably a lot more effective at rooting them out of their hiding places, and minimizing collateral damage.

Minimizing CD is very important. But sometimes it is unavoidable, sadly … Which at times is an unfortunate cost of war. And as I said, if the US was not considering CD in it's combat ops. There would be a number of places in the world that would look Aleppo … or worse … and NO WMDs needed …
