I am enjoying reading this book about Aspern-Essling and it has inspired me to paint some Austrians from the lead pile. I haven't read historical fiction about the continental wars, except a few of the Sharpe series and a lot of the naval stuff, so can anyone point out some compelling authors/titles in this style that they would recommend? |

Rambaud also wrote 'The Retreat' and 'The Exile' covering more of the Napoleonic period. Giles Lapouge wrote 'The Battle of Wagram' which is a bit like Rambaud's first book. There is a series of Books about a group of dragoons by Richard Howard that so far have gone from the Revolution to Eylau. They are all titled 'Bonaparte's ….' There is quite an old book called 'The Winter of the Eagle' by K M Campbell which is probably out of print but is a good 'in the ranks' account of the retreat from Moscow. There are also three books by Armand Cabasson 'The officer's Prey', 'Wolf Hunt' and 'Memory of Flames'. These are about a French officer investigating crimes but have a lot of good historical action as background. Finally there are two books by David Johnson 'Bonaparte's Sabres' about Egypt and 'Sabre General' about Lasalle in Spain. Both are quite old but worth looking out. Hope that helps. |

"7 men of Gascony" by RF Delderfield is a classic, following a group of French soldiers through the wars |
