When will historical wargamers ever learn that Hollywood makes movies that entertain and hopefully, have good box office receipts. Hollywood does not exist to get uniforms right and will often combine several historical characters.
I watch movies to be entertained and as a matter of fact I'll put this out there to any historical gamer. Which would you rather watch; "The Wind and the Lion" or a movie that portrayed what actually happened?
Unless it's a documentary, I don't expect Hollywood to get it right.

@ Cyrus, couldn't agree more about Hollywood. I want and expect entertainment from them.

What makes my blood boil is when a documentary on WW2 starts talking about 'the terrible and fearsome Tiger tank' and goes to a shot of PzIII or similar.

If our documentaries can't get these things right, then as long as Hollywood can entertain me, I'm content.

@Cyrus & langobard

I mostly agree, and I certainly wouldn't want to see a movie on the real Pedicaris (who was a gentleman BTW). However, you, I and a lot of wargamers know the difference and can enjoy the movie for what it is. Likewise, in some situations replicating the real thing would simply be boring no matter who watched it. Trust me I know. I have a YouTube video for the French Garde Republicaine performing a by the regulation cavalry charge exactly as it was done in 1805 at Austerlitz. Accurate, yup. Exciting, not so much. Stupid looking to most movie goers, I'd bet.

Yet I also think some changes could be made without hurting the entertainment value. This is important because for many who aren't as well read as we, the entertainment translates into verified reality which could have non-entertainment implications. But I suppose the biggest issue for me is that Hollywood really does understand how . . . "uninformed" (I was going to say dumb) . . . our society is in general, and exploits that fact. And yet, I can't really blame them, because these guys do have to make a profit because without a profit a lot of the really good non-historical stuff doesn't get produced. So really, I'm not criticising Hollywood as much as I am their customers and, I guess, the process that educates them. I swear this doesn't seem to be as bad in Europe.

That's why I think Teddies are so important. Hollywood is what it is, and so are its customers. Teddies can serve as a counterbalance.

And yeah, the documentary issue is one of many reasons I don't watch the Hitler . . . I mean History . . . Channel. Or is it the Ice Road Trucker channel?

Ciao, Colonel Bill
